    Remove the Packing Material and Position the Printer Tape, spacers, and other packing materials are attached to the printer to protect it during shipping. All of these packing materials must be removed before you use the printer. Important z Save the printer box and all packing materials. You will need these items again if you need to move or ship the printer.

  • Page 20 To remove the feed roller stopper, remove the tape (a), lift the stopper up (b), slide it down and to the side (c), then remove it (d). Attach the front upper cover and back upper cover. Remove all of the tape from the paper cassette, then remove the tray from the cassette.
  • Page 21 Grip the printer firmly by the lifting points provided on the lower left and lower right sides of the printer and move it to where you want to set it up. If you intend to install the optional paper feed unit and paper cassette, position the paper feed unit first.

    3 Connect the Power Cord After positioning the printer, follow this procedure to connect the power cord. Connect the power cord provided with the printer to the power connector on the left side of the printer. Plug the other end of the connector into the power source. Important z When this printer is connected to the network, verify the status of its connection by the lit LNK and 100 lamps, after turning the power on.

    4 Install the Printhead Install the printhead with the printer switched on. Read the messages in the printer display and follow the procedure below. Press the Power button to switch the printer on. After a few seconds “Install P.head Press Online Key” is displayed. Press the Online button.

  • Page 26 Hold the new printhead by its grips (a) and remove it from its case, then remove the first orange protective cap (b). While pressing inward on the tabs (d) of the second protective cap (c) as shown in the illustration, pull down to remove. Important z The nozzles under protective cap 2 (c) are covered with ink for their protection.
  • Page 27 With the nozzles facing down and the electrical contacts facing in, insert the printhead gently into the carriage below. Make sure that the nozzles are not touching the carriage and the printhead is inserted completely. Pull the printhead lock cover toward you and lower it completely until it locks.

    5 Install the Ink Tanks After installing the printhead, install the 6 ink tanks: Y (Yellow) M (Magenta) PM (Photo Magenta) C (Cyan) PC (Photo Cyan) Bk (Black) Important z Before you use the printer the first time, you must install the ink tanks immediately after installing the printhead.
  • Page 30 Important z Always unlock the right cover before you try to open it. To prevent damaging the printer, never force the right cover open. Push up the ink tank lever for the color to set, then open the ink tank cover.
  • Page 31 With the ink ports facing down and the label facing in the direction as shown in the illustration below, insert the ink tank into the holder. Important z Always match the color of the ink with the correct holder before inserting it. The ink tank cannot be installed if you try to install it in the wrong holder or position it incorrectly.
  • Page 32 After all ink tanks have been installed, close the right cover. Press down the right cover gently until you hear it click and lock. After successful installation of the printhead and the ink tanks, “Ink Filling…” is displayed on the operation panel and the ink automatically starts flowing.

    6 Selecting the Display Language The display language is set for English when the printer is shipped. Follow the procedure below to select another language. Note z If you want to continue with the English display, go to “7 Load the Paper Cassette”.

    7 Load the Paper Cassette Follow the procedures below to load the paper cassette. • Loading the paper or other print media in the cassette. • Selecting the media size and type on the operation panel. Loading the Media Follow the procedures below to load the paper cassette provided with the printer.
  • Page 36 Hold the lever on the cassette length guide so it moves freely and move the guide to the holes for the size of the paper. Marks for standard paper sizes are provided on the length guide. Move the guide to the desired mark. Hold the lever on the width guide so it moves freely and move the guide to the paper size mark.
  • Page 37 Pick up a stack of media and fan it to remove static cling. Tap the edges of the stack against a flat surface to align the edges. With the print side (b) facing down, load the stack (c) in the cassette with the length guide against the bottom of the stack.
  • Page 38 z To avoid paper jams, make sure that the trailing edge length guide, and make sure that the edges at (d) are straight and not slanted. z Wait for all of the paper in the cassette to be used up before loading more paper. z Never mix different types of paper or other print media in the same stack.
  • Page 39 Set the paper cassette in the printer. Push the paper cassette completely into the printer. Important z You must set the slide lever to the center position to enable paper feed from the cassette. Note z The output tray extension should be used to prevent large size media from falling off the tray after it is ejected from the printer.

    Media Size and Media Type Settings After loading paper or other print media in the paper cassette, you must use the operation panel menus to select the type and size of the paper or other print media loaded in the cassette. Paper size settings are required only when using B5-JIS.
  • Page 41 Note z The printer is shipped from the factory with the “Media Size” set for “B5-JIS” and the “Media Type” set for “Plain Paper”. z It is recommended that the special settings (1 to 5) be used when smudges and blots appear on the print density is too light while printing on one of the media types listed above.

    8 Select the Interface If the printer is connected to the computer through the USB or parallel port, you must use the printer operation panel to select the appropriate interface setting. If the correct interface setting is not selected, the printer will not be able to communicate with the computer.

    9 Confirm the Print Status of the Printer After the printer and computer have been prepared, print a Nozzle Check pattern to confirm that ink is supplied correctly from each nozzle. Before printing, load A4 or Letter size paper in Cassette 1. Important z Always load A4 or Letter sized paper in Cassette 1.

    10 Adjust the Printhead Position After confirming that the nozzles are operating normally, print the printhead alignment pattern and set each adjustment value. Before printing, load A4 or Letter size paper in Cassette 1 Important z Always load A4 or Letter size paper in Cassette 1. If a smaller size is loaded, it may smear ink inside the printer and onto other media.

Before printing the LF setting pattern, load LF adjust paper provided with the printer into Cassette 1. Important z Always load A4 or Letter size media in Cassette 1.

    Setting the Printer Network Information This chapter describes the printer network settings required when the printer is connected to a TCP/IP network or used as a Remote UI. These settings should be done by the network administrator or the printer manager.

    Software for Network Settings When this printer is connected to a TCP/IP network, the IP address, subnet mask, and other network information settings are required for the printer. We recommend that you set the IP address with the GARO Device Setup Utility first, and then use the Remote UI to set the subnet mask, default gateway, and other network information settings.

    Setting with the GARO Device Setup Utility If you are using Windows, you can use the GARO Device Setup Utility to set the network information. Checking the Printer MAC Address For the network settings you need the printer MAC address (the number used to identify the built-in network interface board).

    Installing a Windows TCP/IP Network Connection This chapter describes the software and settings needed to connect the printer to a TCP/IP network with a Windows computer. Do the installation procedure on all Windows computers that use this printer. TCP/IP Network Connection Software To connect the printer to a TCP/IP network, the printer driver and an operating system with a TCP/IP print function are required.

    Preparing the Windows TCP/IP Function Before installing the printer driver, confirm that the functions required by the operating system have been installed. If they have not been installed, install the required functions from the operating system CD-ROM. Windows XP, Windows 2000 The operating system software required to connect to a TCP/IP network has already been installed.

To confirm whether the required software has been installed, on the desktop click the Start button, click Control Panel, open Network, then check the list on the Configuration sheet.

  • Page 75 Press on the lever to remove the connector cover on the back of the printer. Note z Store the connector cover in a safe place. The connector cover must be re-attached after the LAN cable is disconnected or before moving the printer. Connect the LAN cable to the LAN port of the printer then connect it to the HUB port.

If you click the checkbox on for “After printer installation, install GARO Status Monitor”, the installation will continue with the installation of the GARO Status Monitor. Clicking this checkbox on to install the GARO Status Monitor is recommended.

    Installing a Windows USB or IEEE1394 Connection If you are using the printer with a USB or IEEE1394 connection to a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows 98, install the software for the connection and do the required settings. Do the installation on the Windows computer where the printer is connected.

    Installing the Printer Driver to Windows A USB port can be connected with Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows 98. An IEEE1394 port can be connected with Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Me. Important z The USB port and IEEE1394 port cannot be used at the same time. z If you intend to use the USB connection on a printer that is presently set up with a parallel connection, you must do the procedure on the printer operation panel to switch the printer interface setting to “USB”.
  • Page 84 On the Setup Menu, click “Install GARO Printer Driver”. Read the message on the “Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for GARO Printer Driver” screen, then click the Next button. Note z If an older version of a USB or IEEE1394 driver is installed, a message will inform you that an older version of a USB or IEEE1394 driver is installed in your system.

Select “Manually Set Port to Install”, then click the Next button. If you click the checkbox on for “After printer installation, install GARO Status Monitor”, the installation will continue with the installation of the GARO Status Monitor.

When the next screen opens, switch on the printer, then connect the cable to the printer and the computer.     Installing a Windows Parallel Connection Describes the software and settings required on the computer for a parallel (Centronics) connection to a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows Me, Windows 98, or Windows 95 (Service Pack 6 or later). Do this installation procedure on the Windows computer that will be connected to the printer.

    Connect the Printer Cable Important z If you intend to use a parallel port connection for a printer already set for a USB connection, use the printer operation panel to change the interface setting to Centronics. ( z The printer cannot be connected via the parallel port and USB port or IEEE1394 port at the same time.

    Connecting the Interface Cable Before starting the printer driver installation, connect the Macintosh and the printer with the interface cable. Do the connection for a USB connection, IEEE1394 connection, or network connection, whichever is suited for your Macintosh. To set up an IEEE1394 port connection, you need a Macintosh equipped with an IEEE1394 (FireWire) port and running Mac OS 9.04 or later.
