    ASSEMBLY INSTALLING THE CUTTING HEAD SHIELD Slot Cutting Head Mount Bracket WARNING: To prevent serious personal injury, never Shield operate the unit without the cutting head shield in place. 1. Remove the wing nut and washer from the cutting head shield. 2.

    OIL AND FUEL USING THE RIGHT OIL Use a high-quality SAE 30 weight oil. DO NOT use dirty oil. Failure to use clean oil of the correct type can cause premature engine wear and failure. ADDING OIL: INITIAL USE Oil Fill Plug WARNING: OVERFILLING THE CRANKCASE MAY CAUSE SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY.
  • Page 10 USING THE RIGHT FUEL The use of old fuel is the most common cause of performance problems. Use only fresh, clean unleaded gasoline. NOTE: This unit has a four-cycle engine. DO NOT mix oil with gasoline. Definition of Blended Fuels Today's fuels are often a blend of gasoline and oxygenates such as ethanol, methanol or MTBE (ether).

    STARTING AND STOPPING WARNING: On/Off Switch Operate this unit only in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Carbon monoxide exhaust fumes can be (I = On / O = Off) lethal in a confined area.   • Page 12 USING THE ELECTRIC START ACCESSORY This unit can be started with an optional electric start accessory (items sold separately). Refer to the electric start accessory operator’s manual for the proper use of this feature.     OPERATION HOLDING THE UNIT WARNING: Always wear eye, hearing, hand, foot and body protection to reduce the risk of injury when operating this unit. WARNING: To prevent serious personal injury, avoid arm contact with the engine while operating the unit. The engine may be extremely hot.
  • Page 14 DECORATIVE TRIMMING When trimming around trees, posts, fences, etc., rotate the whole unit so that the cutting head is at a 30° angle to the ground (Fig. 14).   • Page 16 Removing Old Trimming Line and Obstructions Bump Knob 1. When the trimming line runs out, the last piece should automatically eject from the cutting head. If it does not, push the bump knob down and pull the remaining line out of the cutting head.
  • Page 17 CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL WARNING: Check the oil level before each use. The importance of maintaining the proper oil level cannot be overemphasized. 1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool. 2. Set the unit on a flat, level surface, such as a workbench or table.
