2–4 STARTING AND OPERATING
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
Make sure the area around the vehicle
is clear.
The maintenance items in this manual
should be checked periodically, e.g.,
each time you check the engine oil.
Check that all the windows and lights are
clean.
Visually inspect the tires for their ap-
pearance and condition. Also check the
tire pressures for proper inflation.
Position seat and adjust head restraints.
Adjust inside and outside mirrors.
Fasten your seat belts and ask all pas-
sengers to do likewise.
Check the operation of the warning
lights when the key is turned to the "ON"
position.
STARTING THE ENGINE
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Manual transmission :
Move the gearshift lever to Neutral po-
sition and depress the clutch pedal to the
floor while cranking the engine.
Automatic transmission* :
Move the selector lever to "P"(Park) or
"N"(Neutral), although "P" is preferred.
The starter is designed not to operate if
the selector lever is in one of the driv-
ing positions.

3. Crank the engine without touching the
accelerator pedal by turning the ignition
key to the "START" position.
Release the key when the engine starts.
If the engine starts, but fails to run, re-
peat the above procedure.
CAUTION
To help prevent start motor damage;
• Do not operate starter for more
than 15 seconds at a time.
• If engine does not start, wait 10
seconds before trying again.
