Autonegotiation
Autonegotiation means the automatic detection/negotiation of the transmission rate and the
operating mode of ports at the opposite end. This makes it possible to configure different devices
automatically.
Two components connected to a link segment can exchange information about the transfer and
can adapt their settings to each other. The mode with the highest possible speed is set.
Note
• If a port is set permanently to full duplex, the connected partner port must also be set to full
duplex.
• If a port operating in the "Auto negotiation" mode is connected to a partner port that is not
operating in the"Auto negotiation" mode, the partner port setting must be fixed at 100 Mbps
or 10 Mbps half duplex mode.
• If you disable the "Auto negotiation" function, the "MDI/MDI-X autocrossover" function is also
turned off. Then use a crossover cable.

Signaling contact

The signaling contact is an event-driven or manually controlled failsafe alarm relay. Individual
alarms can be configured to trigger the relay when the associated event occurs. The relay can
also be fixed in an open or closed state.
Manually controlling the relay may be useful to:
• Verify the failsafe relay is properly connected following the installation of the device
• Verify the open/close state is caused by the device itself or some other hardware
• Keep the relay in an open/close state while troubleshooting a network issue
Information on the signaling contact
• The signaling contact is a floating switch that signals error statuses by opening the contact.
The signaling contact must be operated within the range of the operating voltage.
If an error/fault occurs, the signaling contact opens. In normal operation, the signaling
contact is closed.
• The signaling contact is connected using a 2-pin plug-in terminal block (spring-loaded
terminal). The terminal block is included in the scope of delivery of the device and can be
ordered as a spare part, see section "Spare parts (Page 21)".
• Note the wiring rules (Page 48).
• The signaling contact can be controlled manually using the CLI commands. Information on
this can be found in the Configuration manuals (Page 7).
