Field Replaceable Units
Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) are modular components that can be replaced as a unit. Some
FRUs are hot swappable and can be serviced without turning the system off. The following topics
discuss working with the ZT 5085's modular components including the Chassis Management
Module, board-level components, power supplies, and the fan trays. For details about specific
board products, refer to the appropriate board-level hardware manuals.

When the system is plugged in, high voltages are present on the midplane. Do not reach into the
enclosure.

Static electricity can damage electronic components. Wear a wrist strap grounded through one of
the system's ESD ground jacks when servicing system components.

NOTE: boards may have one or two ejector handles, captive retention screws may be substituted for ejectors.

Working with Chassis Management Modules
The Chassis Management Modules (CMMs) affect power to slots 2-21 in accordance with the
PICMG* 2.1 specification. PICMG 2.1 defines the power control (BD_SEL#) signals as pulled up
on general-purpose boards. This means that the BD_SEL# signals must be asserted (grounded) for
the boards to power up. CMMs operating in slot 1 control BD_SEL# assertion to slots 2-21.
Jumpers at locations J1-J20 on the ZT 5085 midplane allow assertion of BD_SEL# to slots 2-21 in
the absence of a system CMM. Check that jumpers are removed from all 20 locations if the system
is intended for use with CMMs. Installed jumpers may cause unpredictable behavior from the
chassis management software. The factory default configuration does not install jumpers in these
locations.
