6 Common Service Procedures
Battery Service
WARNING
Be careful when handling the battery. Avoid
spilling electrolyte. Keep flames and sparks away
from the battery.
WARNING
When removing or installing battery cables,
disconnect the negative cable FIRST and reconnect
it LAST. If not done in this order, the positive
terminal can be shorted to the frame by a tool.
DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY CABLES
1. Ignition key switch should be in the OFF position and
parking brake should be set.
2. Tilt the hood forward to access the battery compart-
ment.
3. Loosen the hex nut (C, Figure 17 and 18) and cap-
screw (E) that is securing negative cable clamp (B) to
the negative battery post (D).
4. Remove the negative cable (A) and negative cable
clamp (B) from the negative battery post (D).
NOTE: The cable clamp may have to be spread apart
slightly in order to loosen the clamp from the post. This
can be done by careful separating the clamp using a
screw driver in the slot of the clamp.
5. Secure the negative cable (A) and negative cable
clamp (B) away from the negative battery post (D).
Assemble in reverse order.
