The default gateway is the next hop for data packets leaving the FortiWiFi unit.
You need to add the default gateway to ensure traffic will get out to the Internet.
For details on configuring the gateway see
on page
19.
A DNS server is a service that converts symbolic node names to IP addresses. A
domain name server (DNS server) implements the protocol. In simple terms, it
acts as a phone book for the Internet. A DNS server matches domain names with
the computer IP address. This enables you to use readable locations, such as
fortinet.com when browsing the Internet.
For details on configuring a DNS server, see
page
47.
This section describes how to configure the FortiWiFi unit as a wireless client. As
a client, the FortiWiFi connects to another access point to connect to the Internet.
All other ports on the FortiWiFi are used to connect a remote network. In simple
terms, it is a wireless client, like a user with a laptop. This type of setup enables a
more remote area of a building, which for logistical reasons, cannot be wired to
the main network.
For this setup to work you need to have configured an access point and have it up
and running. For this example, the FortiWiFi unit will get its WLAN IP address
using DHCP from the access point.
Note: If the access point is using MAC address filtering, ensure you add the FortiWiFi unit's
wireless MAC address to the accepted list. To obtain the MAC address, go to
System > Wireless > Settings.
Setting up an access point involves the following steps:
Change to Client mode
Configure the wireless settings
Configure the address and default gateway
Configure the firewall policies
By default, the FortiWiFi unit is in access point mode. The first step is to change to
client mode.
To change to client mode
Go to System > Wireless > Settings.
Select Change for the Operation mode.
Select Client and select OK.
