Use a light weight fabric (tricot, for example). Fold the
fabric as shown and stitch on the fold.
Allow the needle to just clear the folded edge to create
a shelled edge. You may need to increase the needle
thread tension.
If you sew rows of shell stitches, space the rows at least
1.5 cm (5/8˝) apart.
You can also sew shell stitches on knits or soft silky

woven fabrics in any direction.

Buttonholes

Variety of buttonholes

19 Square buttonhole

This square buttonhole is widely used on medium to
heavy weight fabrics.
The buttonhole size is automatically determined by
placing a button in the foot.
20 Round end buttonhole
This buttonhole is used on fine to medium weight fabrics
especially for blouses and children's clothes.
21 Fine fabric buttonhole
This buttonhole is rounded at both ends and is used on
fine, delicate fabrics such as fine silk.
22 Keyhole buttonholes
The Keyhole Buttonhole is widely used on medium to
heavy weight fabrics. It is also suitable for larger and
thicker buttons.
23-24 Stretch buttonholes
This buttonhole can be used on stretch fabrics. It can
also be used as a decorative buttonhole.
25 Welted buttonhole
This is a template pattern for the hand sewn welted
(bound) buttonhole.
