9. TROUBLESHOOTING

ENGINE PROBLEMS
Engine Will Not Start
1. Check control
positions.
2. Check fuel.
3. Remove and inspect
spark plug.
4. Take mower to a
Honda dealer, or refer
to shop manual.
Loss of Power
1. Check throttle position. Throttle not set to fast
2. Check grass height.
3. Check under mower
deck.
4. Check air filter.
5. Check fuel.

Possible Cause
Fuel valve OFF.
Throttle lever in wrong
position.
Key switch OFF (HME
type)
Out of fuel.
Bad fuel; mower stored
without treating or draining
gasoline, or refueled with
bad gasoline.
Spark plug faulty, fouled, or
improperly gapped.
Spark plug wet with fuel
(flooded engine).
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves
stuck, etc.
Possible Cause
position.
Grass too tall to cut.
Mower deck clogged.
Air filter clogged.
Bad fuel; mower stored
without treating or draining
gasoline, or refueled with
bad gasoline.
Correction
Turn fuel valve ON (p. 8).
Move throttle lever to choke
position, unless the engine
is warm (p. 23).
Turn key switch ON to use
the recoil starter (page 25)
Refuel (p. 15).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 39). Refuel
with fresh gasoline (p. 15).
Clean, gap, or replace
spark plug (p. 47).
Dry and reinstall spark
plug. Start engine with
throttle lever in fast position
(p. 26).
Replace or repair faulty
components as necessary.
Correction
Move throttle to fast (p. 8).
Raise cutting height (p. 19),
cut narrower swath (p. 32),
or cut more frequently.
Adjust the clip director
(p. 20).
Clean out mower deck
(p. 33).
Clean or replace air filter
(p. 46).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 39). Refuel
with fresh gasoline (p. 15).
