19. Tighten the bolts using the torque plus angle method: 150 lb-ft
(203 N m) plus 30 degrees ± 1 degree angle. The resultant
peak torque must be a minimum of 260 lb-ft (352 N m) or
higher. Follow the tightening pattern shown in Figure 5.23.

20. Inspect for gaps between the back surface of the ring gear and
the case flange. Use a feeler gauge to inspect at four points
around the assembly. No gap is allowed. Figure 5.24.
If a gap is found: Inspect the case halves and ring gear for
the problem that causes the gap. Repair or replace parts as
necessary. Reassemble the ring gear on the plain case half.
Reinspect for gaps.

21. Check the rotating resistance of the differential gears. The
differential assembly must rotate freely.

1.
Make an inspection tool using an axle shaft that matches the
spline size of the differential side gear. Cut the shaft to
approximately 12-inches (304.8 mm). Weld a nut onto the end
of the shaft. Figure 5.25.

3.
Install the tool into the differential until the splines of the tool
are engaged with one side gear. Figure 5.26.
4.
Place a torque wrench onto the nut of the tool and, while
retaining the ring gear, rotate the differential gears. As the
differential gears rotate, read the value indicated on the torque
wrench. Figure 5.27.
