Glossary
Tagged Image File Format. A digital image format widely used for images that are to be printed or published.
TIFF
TIFF images can be compressed losslessly.
A variation of a color produced by adding white, thus decreasing saturation and increasing lightness.
tint
A measure of the precision with which certain tools work. The tolerance describes the difference in value
tolerance
between adjacent pixels affected by a tool. If the tolerance is high, many more pixels are affected or selected than if the
tolerance is low.
An adjustment made in the tones of an image: shadows, highlights, or midtones. You can adjust
tonal correction
highlight and shadow values to increase the tonal range, adjust the brightness of the midtones without affecting
shadow and highlight values, and so on.
To scale, shrink, enlarge, skew, distort, rotate, or change the perspective of a layer, selection, or shape.
transform
The box that surrounds the portion of an image you are changing with a transform
transform bounding box
command.
An effect added between two photos, for instance in a slide show, that affects the visual presentation of how
transition
one photo changes to the other. For example, you can add a Fade transition between photos to make one photo fade
out of view as the next photo fades into view.
In digital photography, the functionality that supports transparent areas in an image or image layer.

Certain image formats do not support transparency.
To remove pixels from an image by using the Trim command in Photoshop. Photoshop Elements doesn't have
trim

A protocol by which applications and devices, such as scanners and cameras, exchange information.

A selection outline in the shape of text.

A technique that sharpens details in an image by increasing the contrast between light and dark areas.

(The name originates from traditional photography, where contrast is increased by adding a slightly blurred negative
over the original.)

Video Compact Disc. A CD that includes MPEG-formatted audio and video. You can play a VCD in a DVD

player or CD player. You can include menus in VCDs that you create in Photoshop Elements.
Lines, shapes, and other graphic image components stored in a format that incorporates geometric
vector graphics
formulas for rendering the image elements. For this reason, the graphics scale without degradation of image quality,
and there are no jagged lines in the output. Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics program.
Edited versions of photos that are automatically grouped together when you save edits in the Editor. By
version set
default, when you edit a photo in the Editor, Photoshop Elements saves the edited version as the top photo and groups
the original and previously edited versions underneath it. You can reveal or ungroup photos in a version set at any time.
