    Safety Information The TravelPilot DX-N has been designed for use in cars. Such special information as height restrictions or maximum permissible loads as required for commercial or semi- trucks or busses have not been included on the navigation CDs.     General Information About these operating instructions These operating instructions were written to provide you with information on the oper- ation and functions of your TravelPilot DX-N and to allow you to operate the equip- ment easily and correctly. Please read these instructions carefully before you use your TravelPilot DX-N for the first time and keep them handy for future reference in the car.

    General Information How navigation works Your TravelPilot DX-N uses GPS, a satellite-supported locating system, to determine the current position of the vehicle. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a sys- tem which can be used to reliably determine your location anywhere in the world. A “gyroscope”...

    General Information Theft protection system It is possible to activate a coding for your TravelPilot DX-N so that the TravelPilot DX-N cannot be operated after it has been disconnected from the battery (e.g. in the event that it is stolen). If the coding is active, it will be necessary to enter the code number before the unit can be operated again after it has been disconnected from the battery.

Plus Point: The last 20 cities entered will be stored automatically. This allows you to find cities you select frequently more quickly because they appear di- rectly in the input textbox.

In smaller towns, this menu item allows you to enter the town center as your destination be- cause entering a street might not always be possible.

    Entering destinations Select the desired destination. Press The name of the destination will appear in a menu. The selection bar will be positioned on “Start”. Now you can press route guidance. For more information, refer to the section on “Route guid- ance”.

    Entering destinations Entering destinations in map mode (the globe icon) to determine a destination for navigation in map mode. Select on the top line of the “Destination on map” menu. Press A map which indicates north facing up will appear. The map will show the surroundings of the last active destination.

    Entering destinations Starting route guidance Once you have determined the destination on the map, you can start route guidance directly. Press to access the selection menu. Select “Start”. Press A menu containing the data on the current destination will appear. You will hear the following voice output: “The route is being calculated.”.

    Entering destinations Destinations in the destination memory The destination memory is used to save frequently used destinations, to give them a short name (for identification purposes) and to recall them at a later date for route guidance. Plus Point: The TravelPilot DX-N automatically saves the last 12 destinations used.

    Route guidance There are two display modes available for route guidance. You can select between route guidance using arrow symbols and route guidance using a map. Plus Point: Regardless of which display mode you choose, a friendly voice will always remind you when it is time to make a turn. After you have started route guidance and the route has been calculated, route guid- ance will begin using the display mode selected last.

    Route guidance Route guidance in the arrow symbols mode When you use route guidance with arrow symbols, arrows will appear in the display to indicate the direction in which you must drive as described by the spoken recommen- dations. This display mode also includes other information, such as the current dis- tance to the destination, the remaining driving time, the name of the road on which you are currently travelling and the name of the road onto which the next turn will be made.

    Route guidance Route guidance with map display When you use route guidance with the map display, you can select a map showing your position surroundings (current vehicle position) or the destination surroundings. The map showing your position surroundings changes in its alignment to indicate your driving direction (“Automatic”) or can be made to point due north.

    Route guidance Using the traffic congestion function You can alter your route quickly on the basis of the traffic situation (e.g. road works, Road closed). The TravelPilot DX-N will then calculate a new route to bypass the traffic congestion. In order to do this, you must know the distance of the beginning and the end of the traffic congestion from your current position.

    Selecting route options You can select a number of route options for route calculation to meet your individual needs. You can always select between the short and the fast route. In addition, you can use or avoid motorways, toll roads and ferries on or off. Plus Point: You can alter and save the route options for any single route or for route guidance in general.

    Destination memory You can use the destination memory to name (for identification purposes) and save frequently used destinations. You can then retrieve these destinations from a list sort- ed according to your own criteria or alphabetically. The TravelPilot DX-N also auto- matically saves the last twelve destinations used.

    Other functions Map display without route guidance While driving without active route guidance, you can use the TravelPilot DX-N to dis- play a map of the surrounding area. This map can display all of the information avail- able for navigation, e.g. parking garages and public facilities. Setting the clock You can set daylight-savings time, the current time, the display of the arrival or driving time and select the time display format as well. The current time is automatically set via the GPS signal.

Calibration after changing the tires When the car tyres are changed, from summer to winter tires for example, it might be necessary to calibrate the TravelPilot DX-N again.

The status information is indicated in percent. Manual calibration You can also calibrate the TravelPilot DX-N manually. To do so, you have to drive a distance of at least 330 feet at a speed of not more than 20 mph.

    Apendix Available navigation CD-ROMs Precise routes to your destination The navigation CDs know the roads right down to the last detail; in many cities, it is even possible to select house numbers. The informative map displays your destina- tion. Other convenient features include traffic congestion display, ferry connections and many destinations which can be selected directly, such as airports, parking, gas stations, etc.
