Hot Engine
Turn key in steering lock clockw ise to
the stop and start engine immediately
w ith o u t depressing the accelerator.
A s long as the key is held against the
sto p the starter remains engaged.
Release the key as soon as the
engine has started firing.
Turning off
Turn key in steering lock to position
" 0 " and remove only when the vehicle
has stopped.
Should the engine continue to o per­
ate with the key in steering lock
position " 0", refer to page 63.
With very high coolant tem peratures
(e.g. after driving on mountain
passes), do not shut dow n the engine
immediately but allow to run at slightly
increased idle speed fo ra n o th e r 1-2
m inutes approximately.
N otes
Due to the installed starter non-re­
peat unit, the key in the steering lock
m ust be returned to " 0 " position
before making a new starting attem pt.
Observe the oil pressure gauge
immediately after starting. In a very
cold engine the oil pressure will only
rise slowly, some tim e after the
S tartin g and Turning off th e Engine
engine has started. Do not speed up
the engine before pressure is regis­
tered on the pressure gauge.
The charge indicator lamp must go
out as soon as the engine has started.
If the preglow indicator fails to light
up, the preglowing system is defec­
tive and should be repaired at a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station at
the earliest possible date.
In areas where tem peratures fre­
quently drop below —18° C /0° F, we
recom m end to have a coolant prehea­
te r installed. Every MERCEDES-BENZ
service station will readily advise you
on this subject.
