The Garmin G3X system autopilot is not a fully certified flight control
system. It is intended to be used as a "flight support system" during cross
country flight in powered condition.
The autopilot can control the pitch and the roll angle of the aircraft. The
two autopilot actuators are connected by pushrods for the elevator and
aileron control system. Both actuators are equipped with slip clutches. The
autopilot equipment has the following functionalities:
Roll hold (ROL)
Pitch hold (PIT)
Heading hold (HDG)
Track interception and hold (GPS)
Flight plan navigation (GPS)
Altitude hold (ALT)
Vertical speed (VS)
Vertical navigation (VNAV)
The autopilot interface is part of the electronic flight information system
(EFIS), displayed on the PFD. The autopilot provides roll (aileron) and/or
pitch (elevator) control, each axis is driven by a Garmin GSA 28 actuator.
These actuators feature feedback for "health," resistance to commanded
movements, motor override (or "slip"), and other data to the EFIS. This
communication between the EFIS and the actuators provides the pilot with
a high degree of awareness of the overall performance of the AP.
The actuators are equipped with an advanced brushless DC motor and
gearbox, with an engagement clutch to allow for very low-friction
operation of the aircraft flight controls with clutch disengaged. The GSA
28 performs continuous internal monitoring and fault detection, and can
also safely be back-driven by the pilot in the event of an engagement
clutch fault condition.
