American Petroleum Institute (API) Engine
Oil Identification Symbol
This symbol means
that the oil has been
certified
American Petroleum
Institute (API). The
manufacturer
recommends
Certified engine oils.
CAUTION!
Do not use chemical flushes in your engine oil
as the chemicals can damage your engine.
Such damage is not covered by the New
Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Engine Oil Selection (Gasoline Engine) –
ACEA Categories
For countries that use the ACEA European Oil
Categories for Service Fill Oils, use engine oils
that meet the requirements of ACEA C3, and
that are approved to MB 229.31 or MB 229.51.

Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade) –
Gasoline Engines
SAE 5W-20 engine oil is recommended for all
operating temperatures. This engine oil im-
proves low temperature starting and vehicle
by
the
fuel economy.
The engine oil filler cap also shows the recom-
only
mended engine oil viscosity for your engine.
API
For information on engine oil filler cap location,
refer to "Engine Compartment" in "Maintaining
Your Vehicle" for further information.
NOTE:
SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to MB
229.31 or MB 229.51 may be used when SAE
5W-20 engine oil is not available.
Engine Oil Selection – Diesel Engine
For best performance and maximum protection
under all types of operating conditions, the
manufacturer recommends only Synthetic Die-
sel engine oils conforming to the most current
version of ACEA C3, that are approved to VW
507.00.
Engine Oil Viscosity – Diesel Engine
Use any of these viscosity grades meeting the
ACEA Categories listed under Engine Oil Se-
lection: SAE 5W-30, SAE 0W-40, SAE 5W-40,
SAE 10W-40, or SAE 15W-40.
Synthetic Engine Oils – Gasoline Engine
Only
There are a number of engine oils being pro-
moted as either synthetic or semi-synthetic. If
you chose to use such a product, use only
those oils that are approved to MB 229.31 or
MB 229.51. Follow the maintenance schedule
that describes your driving type.
Materials Added to Engine Oils
Do not add any supplemental materials, other
than leak detection dyes, to your engine oil.
Engine oil is an engineered product and its
performance may be impaired by supplemen-
tal additives.
Disposing of Used Engine Oil and Oil
Filters
Care should be taken in disposing of used
engine oil and oil filters from your vehicle. Used
oil and oil filters, indiscriminately discarded,
can present a problem to the environment.
