10. Appendix F: FAQ

When will SR support a DSL interface?
It is unlikely that Avaya Secure Router 1000 or 3000 will support a native DSL interface. Instead future
models based on the new modular formats will support DSL. This interface should be introduced late
2007 / early 2008. For DSL applications with 1000 and 3000 an external DSL modem should be paired
with the router using one of the fixed Ethernet interfaces.
Will SR support native voice integration?
Neither SR 1000 or 3000 will support native voice gateways however the new modular models will be
capable of accommodating service cards to introduce new applications to the platforms including native
voice services.
What if my customer/partner needs multiple serial interfaces?
Currently only the SR 1001S and SR 3120 support serial interfaces. For applications requiring multiple
serial interfaces in a cost effective platform a new SR modular model will be introduced shortly to address
this.
When will SR support GE interfaces?
All new SR models introduced in 2007 and beyond will support tri-speed fixed ports. In addition new
modules will allow additional Ethernet interfaces including both copper and fiber.
Can the Web GUI be used to configure all features of the SR?
No. The Web GUI allows a subset of features to be configured to address the needs of IT-lite branches.
The most common configurations have wizards to enable faster deployment. In addition some more
complex features are available for configuration however the intention is not to replace the CLI as the
primarily interface for device configuration.
What is Multilink and what kind of performance can I expect?
Multilink allows multiple interfaces to be bundled together allowing them to appear as a single interface at
layer 2-7. Multilink technology uses packet interleaving allowing all interfaces to be used when load-
balancing traffic. This is not flow dependent meaning a 4 Mbps video stream can be forwarded across a
2xE1 bundle. Typical failover times are around 1 second and do not result in dropped flows making
Multilink technologies an effective solution for bandwidth scaling and resiliency for converged applications
(i.e. VoIP).
Does the SR support legacy protocols?
No. The SR is streamlined for IP. The transparent LAN service is not restricted to IP only however from
a routing perspective it is an IP-only router. This speeds development and reduces TTM and addresses
the large majority of networks today.
