The tank farm often has a natural organization that can be used for scoping networks. Wireless points are ideally organized by tank groups.

The design rules are worked out to ensure a secure margin when implementing a wireless network. During commissioning the implementation of the design rules must be verified. To stress test the network, reduce the effective range of the devices in 10% increments. Then test the design rules against reduced effective ranges.

  • Page 21 In order to setup a wireless network, the THUM Adapters and repeaters need to be configured for communication with the Emerson Wireless Gateway. The configuration is done by using a wired connection via a HART modem. Once the THUM Adapter is online and connected to the Gateway, some configuration settings, such as update rate (burst rate) and sub-device type, can be changed via the wireless network.

The THUM can be installed on a vertical or horizontal pipe or an angle bar, 25-50 mm (1-2 in.) in diameter, as shown in Figure 4-5.
