Arbor Repair
Arbor Assembly - Early Model Arbors
1. While supporting the bearing's inner race, drive the
shaft into the bearing until it seats on the shoulder of
the shaft. Repeat for second bearing.
2. Install the arbor assembly into the lower housing.
Pack the housing with multipurpose grease.
NOTE: Clean all excess grease off the mating flange
area.
NOTE: Be sure to replace the foam gasket. If a replace-
ment gasket is not used, seal the lower and upper hous-
ings with RTV or silicone sealer.
3. Install the upper housing onto the lower housing
assembly, align the pins, and clamp together. Check
the shaft for smooth, easy rotation of bearings.
NOTE: New bearings will feel stiff but will still rotate
smoothly.
4. Assemble the shim washer, lower grass shield, and
blade adapter on the blade end of the arbor shaft.
Secure with the collar.
NOTE: The blade end of the arbor shaft has recessed
spines to hold the collar.
5. Assemble the upper grass shield and pulley on top of
the arbor shaft. Secure with the heavy washer, lock
washer and capscrew. Torque to 50-70 ft. lbs.
6. Install the arbor assembly in the mower deck. (See
removal steps #1-3) Secure with six Taptite hex
screws placing the two longer screws (used to secure
the belt guide) in the locations noted during removal.
7. Install belt, guides, and guards. See Figures 10-11.
8. Install blade. See Mower Blade Service.
NOTE: The arbor shaft may have up to 1/8" of end-
play. This is normal and acceptable.
