From the Uniform Plumbing Code 2000 - Section 510 -
16
Protection From Damage
16
1. Water heaters generating a glow, spark or flame capable of
17
igniting flammable vapors may be installed in a garage, provided
17
the pilots, burners or heating elements and switches are at least
17
eighteen (18) inches (457 mm) above the floor level.
17
17
2. Where such water heaters installed within a garage are enclosed
18
in a separate, approved compartment having access only from
22
outside of the garage, such water heaters may be installed at floor
22
level provided the required combustion air is also taken from the
22
exterior of the garage. Fuel burning water heaters having sealed
23
combustion chambers need not be elevated.
23
3. All water heaters installed in areas where they may be subjected
24
to mechanical damage shall be suitably guarded against such
24
damage by being installed behind adequate barriers or by being
25
elevated or located out of the normal path of a vehicle using any
26
such garage.
26
4. The Administrative Authority may require the use of an
27
approved dielectric insulator on the water piping connections of
27
water heaters and related water heating equipment.
30
5. In seismic zones 3 and 4, water heaters shall be anchored or
31
strapped to resist horizontal displacement due to earthquake
33
motion. Strapping shall be at points within the upper one-third
35
(1/3) and lower one-third (1/3) of its vertical dimensions. At the
35
lower point, a minimum distance of four (4) inches (102 mm) shall
35
be maintained above the controls with the strapping.
37
6. A water heater supported from the ground shall rest on level
37
concrete or other approved base extending not less than three (3)
37
inches (76 mm) above the adjoining ground level.
37
37
7. When a water heater is located in an attic, attic-ceiling assembly,
38
floor-ceiling assembly, or floor-subfloor assembly where damage
39
may result from a leaking water heater, a watertight pan of
39
corrosion resistant materials shall be installed beneath the water
39
heater with a minimum three-quarter (3/4) inch (20 mm) diameter
40
drain to an approved location.

Part 1 - General Safety Information

41
This water heater is approved for indoor installations only and is
41
not intended for use as a pool heater. Clearance to combustible
42
materials: 0" top, bottom, sides, and back. Heater must have room
43
for service: 2" front, 2" left and 3" right sides, 12" top, 2" back are
43
minimum recommended service clearances. (A combustible door
43
or removable panel is acceptable front clearance. A 3" minimum
44
clearance must be provided from the appliance front cover to the
46
removable panel or combustible door.) This water heater has been
48
approved for closet installation and installation on combustible
52
flooring. Install the water heater in a location where temperature
56
and pressure relief valve discharge or a leak will not result in
58
damage to the surrounding area. The appliance is rated Category IV
59
(pressurized vent, likely to form condensate in the vent) and requires
a special vent system designed for pressurized venting. Use only
Category IV vent systems.
NOTE: Obey all local codes. Obtain all applicable permits before
installing the water heater.
NOTE: Install all system components and piping in such a manner
that does not reduce the performance of any fire rated assembly.
