4.1 PRELIMINARY PROCEDURE

Set t he MIC and CAR controls to zero and the MODE switch
to LSB, USB, or CW to prevent accidental transmtt con-
ditions be fore tuning. The TS-820 must be operated into a

75 ohm antenna or dummy load with an SWR less
than 2 : 1. Random length w ire antennas o r light-bulb dum-
my loads cannot be used. Conventional half-wave dipoles
and beam antennas shou ld only be used at or near their
resonan t frequen cy. Exceeding an SWR of 2 : 1 can
damage the components in the output stage of the
transceiver.
Be sure to complete all of the required cabling, as described
in Section 2 .3

With a suitable antenna and m icrophone (or key) connected
to the tra nsceiver, set the TS -820 switches to posi tions des-
cribed in Table 1.

The remaining controls do not affect reception so t hey may
be in any position.
Push th e POWER switch on. The meter, dial scale, and VFO
indicator w ill light. indicating that t he transceiver is opera -
ting. The receiver section is fully solid-state allowing recep·
tion with t he H. SW switch turned to OFF. Advance the AF
GAIN control 'clockwise until some receiver noise is heard in
the speaker. Turn the main tuning dial w it hin the frequency
range of the ama teur band chosen until a signal is heard.
Tu ne the signal for the clearest possible recep tion. and then
adjust the DRIVE con trol for maximum deflectictn of th e S--
meter.
The RF GAIN control varies the AGC feedback voltage which
effects the S -meter reading. With the RF GAIN control fu lly
clockwise. the S·meter gives a proper signal strength rea -
d ing. Tuning the control
counter-clock~ise
reduces the RF
GAIN , reducing signal strength and band noise.
4.3 READING THE OPERATING
FREQUENCY
The frequency dial of TS-820 indicates accurate carr ier
positions regardless of op erating modes because of the use
of a special circuit system. thus the transmit and receive fre-
quency can· be directly read on the dial. except for CW recep-
tion in which case the frequency o n the dial is lower by the
beat frequency than the receive frequency.
When the digital display DG- 1 (option) is used.
