environment.
Flexibility: The choice between the CD and the USB flash drive boils down to the flexibility
that you need from the toolkit environment and custom scripts. You can quickly edit the
Linux boot loader configuration file, a script, or configuration file on a USB flash drive but
burning a new CD is more complicated.
Complexity: The choice between a network boot and a boot device depends on the scope
and complexity of your deployment. If you plan to set up over a hundred servers at a time,
you should definitely invest in a PXE-enabled installation environment in which the Integrity
servers boot over the network. On the other hand, if you plan to deploy your servers in more
measured increments, the DVD may be an optimal solution. You could burn a dozen DVDs
at a time, insert each in an Integrity server, reboot, and return to a dozen managed servers.

Position the repository

Every server that boots to the SSTK environment must have access to the repository of
configuration files, scripts, utilities, OS files, driver files, and application files. The Linux boot
loader configuration file specifies the location of the repository.
If you host the repository on the workstation, it must be accessible to the Integrity servers being
deployed. If, for example, your workstation is on a public network and the servers are on a
private isolated network, the SSTK will not work. If you host the repository on a boot device, be
sure the device has enough capacity to hold both the SSTK environment and the OS.
IMPORTANT:
hybrid solution if that works for you. For example, you can boot the model server from a USB
device, host the repository on the workstation to read the configuration of the model server,
customize the scripts and files, create a bootable DVD for testing on a few servers, and then set
up a network-based installation for a full-scale deployment.

Go with the workflow

Server deployments using SSTK involve four main stages. The following subsections provide a
high level overview of the deployment workflow.

Setting up a model server

If you do not have a preconfigured Integrity server similar to those you want to deploy, select
one of the servers to be deployed and configure it as the model server. On cell-based servers you
must configure the hard partitions on the model server using Partition Manager. For detailed
instructions, see the nPartition Guide (on the Smart Setup CD or at
http://docs.hp.com/en/windows.html). You can configure the server using the EFI-based Setup
Utility on the Smart Setup CD. You can configure the storage array controller using the EFI-based
Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA) before booting the OS or run the Array
Configuration Utility (ACU) after the OS is installed. For detailed instructions, see the Smart

The Smart Setup CD is included in the HP Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack Kit. You can also
download the ISO from http://www.hp.com/support/itaniumservers/. You will also need the
