    Preparing the Camera Attaching the camera strap Pull the strap tight so that it does not come loose. Loading the batteries and the xD-Picture Card™ (sold separately) into the camera Do not insert anything other than an xD-Picture Card or the microSD Attachment into the camera.

    Shooting, Playback, and Erasing Shooting with the optimum aperture value and shutter speed ( P mode) In this mode, automatic shooting settings are activated while also allowing changes to a wide range of shooting menu functions such as exposure compensation, white balance, etc. as needed.

    To take the picture, gently press the shutter button all the way down while being careful not to shake the camera. To return to shooting, either press the K button or press the shutter button halfway down.

    Using Shooting Modes The shooting mode changes in the order of P, G , h , s , A each time the K button is pressed. By switching to any of other shooting modes, most settings in h and s mode will be changed to the default setting of the respective shooting mode.

    Adjusting the brightness ( Exposure compensation) The standard brightness (appropriate exposure) set by the camera based on the shooting mode (except for G ) can be adjusted brighter or darker to obtain a desired shot.     Using the self-timer After the shutter button is pressed all the way down, the picture is taken after a short delay. Press the Y button. SELFTIMER Use kl to select the desired setting option, and press the B button to set. Option Description The self-timer is deactivated.

Adding sound to still images [R] (FE-45/X-40) PLAYBACK MENU Submenu 2 Application The camera adds (records) sound for approx. 4 seconds while playing back the image. This is useful for recording notes or comments about the image.

    SETUP MEMORY FORMAT/FORMAT Before formatting, check that no important data is left in the internal memory or card. Non-Olympus cards and cards that have been formatted by a computer must be formatted with this camera before use. Submenu 2 Completely erases the image data in the internal memory (including protected images).

    Printing Direct printing ( PictBridge By connecting the camera to a PictBridge- compatible printer, you can print images directly without using a computer. To fi nd out if your printer supports PictBridge, refer to the printer’s instruction manual. PictBridge is a standard for connecting digital cameras and printers of different makers and printing out pictures directly.

    Shooting tips When you are unsure of how to take a picture that you envision, refer to the information below. Focusing “Focusing on the subject” ● Taking a picture of a subject not in the center of the screen After focusing on an object at the same distance as the subject, compose the shot, and take the picture.

    Color hue “Taking pictures with colors at the same shade as they appear” ● Taking pictures by selecting [WB] (p. 25) Best results in most environments can normally be obtained with the AUTO setting, but for some subjects, you should try experimenting with different settings.

    The number of pictures that you can take may vary considerably depending on the battery manufacturer and shooting conditions.
