SAFETY SWITCHES

The centrifugal switch slides back and forth on the motor's shaft to operate the
contacts as shown in the previous diagram. This switch provides safety in the
event the motor fails. When the motor is running, centrifugal force causes the
weight (black wing in the photo) to slide back toward the motor windings. This
motion allows electricity to operate the heater (electric element or gas valve).
RUN Position
There is an additional safety in the form of a belt switch that shuts off power to
the electric motor if the belt breaks. Belt tension holds the bogey pulley off the
belt switch. If the belt breaks, the switch opens and power to the motor is cut.
When the motor stops, the centrifugal switch functions as a safety device to turn
off the fuel (gas or electricity) to the heater.

The centrifugal switch includes a multi-
pin connector (shown).
The belt switch is simple. If the belt
breaks, the spring pulls the lever down
and it presses the switch.
