5.8 Calibrating the USM 36

Calibrating the display range

Before working with the USM 36, it must be calibrated:
You have to adjust the material velocity and the display
range, as well as allow for the probe delay, depending
on the material and the dimensions of the test object.
To ensure a safe and proper operation of the USM 36,
it is necessary that the operator be adequately trained in
the field of ultrasonic testing technology.
Below you will find some examples of common calibra-
tion methods for certain test applications. In addition,
the USM 36 is provided with a semi-automatic calibra-
tion function (see Section Case B: With unknown ma-
terial velocity, page 5-30).

Choice of the measuring point

The sound path measurement by means of the echo
evaluation depends on the choice of measuring point
(see Section TOF MODE, page 5-24).
A T T E N T I O N
In any case, the setting of the measuring
point in TOF mode for the calibration and for
the subsequent test use must always be
identical. Otherwise, measuring errors may
occur.
