RECORDING THE VOICE PROMPTS
Eight different talk groups can be selected using DTMF keys 1‐8 on the users' phone. When the
gateway receives this command it will send a command to the radio to switch to the
appropriate zone. It will then respond with a voice prompt letting the user know that the radio
is ready for use on that particular zone. You can record each of these prompts using the
Kenwood palm microphone connected on the radios' front microphone jack. It is best to
perform this procedure in a quiet environment to avoid recording background noise.
Follow these instructions for programming:
1. Turn off the radio and the NEXLINK gateway by pressing the power button on the radio
down for 3 seconds.
2. Grasp the microphone and get ready to press the PTT button on the mic.
3. Press and hold the power button on the radio down for 3 seconds to turn the radio on.
4. The radio will go through its boot up procedure. When you see "VOLUME 5" on the
radios LCD screen, press and release the PTT on the microphone quickly.
5. In about 2 seconds, you should see "REC" appear on the LCD screen of the radio. If you
see "PA" instead, the radio is not programmed correctly. Refer to the programming
section.
6. At this point you are ready to record the voice prompt for zone 1, channel 1 in the radio.
The radio will show on its LCD display the Zone you will be recording. Hold the
microphone about 2 inches from your mouth. Press and hold the microphones' PTT and
speak the prompt you wish immediately as you only have about 2‐3 seconds per
prompt. Release PTT at the end of your prompt. Do not speak before pressing PTT and
do not release PTT before you finish speaking your prompt.
7. The NexLink gateway will then increment to the next Zone automatically for you to
record the next prompt. Continue with the same procedure stated in #6 above for all
zones programmed in the radio. The NexLink gateway will only record the number of
zones you have programmed, up to 8.
8. When complete, the REC will disappear from the radios LCD screen, allowing the radio
to be used as normal.
9. To test your voice prompts, call the gateway and select each zone (1‐8 on the DTMF
keypad) to make sure the prompts are recorded correctly.
