    Chapter 2: Networking Basics An Introduction to Local Area Networks Simply put, a router is a network device that connects two networks together. The Router connects your local area network (LAN), or the group of PCs in your home or office, to the Internet. The Router processes and regulates the data that travels between these two networks.

Advanced Routing Firewall & NAT. The Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall reviews data packets entering your network. NAT is a security feature that enables the Router to translate IP addresses of your local area network to a different IP address for the Internet.

DMZ hosting forwards all the ports at the same time to one PC. The Port Range Forwarding is more secure because it only opens the ports you want to have opened, while DMZ hosting opens all the ports of one computer, exposing the computer to the Internet.

    This appendix provides solutions to problems that may occur during the installation and operation of the Router. Read the description below to solve your problems. If you can't find an answer here, check the your Internet phone service provider’s website or the Linksys website at www.linksys.com. Common Problems and Solutions 1.
