FUEL OCTANE REQUIREMENTS-The 10.5
to
1 compressIOn
ratio engine, standard on fuel injection and
Tri-Power
equipped cars,
and the
10.0
to
1
compression ratio engine, standard on
Hydra
-Matic
cars,
require
premium fuel with
a "Research Octane"
rating no lower
than
97.
The
8.6
to 1
compression ratio engine, standard on Synchro-
Mesh cars, requires
91 minimum
octane fuel.
Use
of fuels with
inadequate
octane
ratings
will
result in detonation
(also called spark knock,
ping,
etc.) and
can
result in severe engine
damage. This is not due to
any
manufacturing defect but constitutes
misuse
of
the
engine. A filel which will permit operation without
heavy
or
continuous
detonation must be
used at all
times.
In many areas
of
the
world, fuels
with
octane ratings sufficient to
meet
the requirements of a
modern high
compression engine are not avail-
able.
Therefore,
before
taking your car outside of continental United
States
or
Canada it is
advisable
to ascertain the
octane
ratings
available
in the countries
you propose
to
visit. Such
information
can be secured
for
most foreign
countries from General
Motors
Overseas Operations,
Service Department, 9-164 General
Motors
Building, Detroit
2,
Mich.
If
you
plan
to
drive
your car in any area where
the fuel
octane require-
ments
are
not
of
s:
u fficient rating, it
is suggested
that
you
contact
your
Pontiac dealer for further
