Symptoms:
Fuzzy channels
Pixilated/grainy picture
Not picking up all the digital channels
Tools:
Tutor Cable Signal Meter C-100
6' Coax cable with compression fittings
90 degree coax adapters
Troubleshooting:
Run a channel scan to verify tuner is picking up all channels
Check all coax connections for good fit through-out the unit
o Coax cables with screw on fittings are not recommended and should be replaced with compression
fittings when possible (
Check coax cable for bends 90 degrees or more (
o Try to reroute coax cable if possible to eliminate tight bends (use zip ties where necessary)
o Can also use 90 degree coax adapters if necessary (
Check coax cable for pinches and/or flat spots. If the cables being used are too long they will be zip tied in
front of the unit and can be run over by a treadmill elevation rack wheel or pinch in the rack itself.
On cardio units with a Generator, make sure the coax is routed around the generator and not crossing it as
this can cause signal issues (use zip ties where necessary)
o If a coax is in question running by a generator, you can by-pass the internal coax by utilizing a 6'
compression fit coax cable to run from the wall coax directly to the TV tuner. If the picture is better,
then you can open up the unit and reroute around the generator.
Units that share a common coax cable from 1 wall connection should have amplifier/ signal boosters (
4
) so there is no loss of signal by sharing a connection or for long cable runs (amplifiers/boosters must be
installed BEFORE a splitter). Loss of signal can cause reduced cable pixilation and graininess.
Test the cable signal strength using your Tutor Meter C-100
o First - from the wall outlet
o Second – from before the splitter (if they are present)
o Third – after the splitter (if they are present)
o Fourth – at the tuner
In order to provide high quality images, a signal strength of 10dBmV (+ or – 2dBmV) should be supplied to
each screen regardless of whether it is an analog or unencrypted digital signal.
