TIpS FROm ThE pROS Double-check all of the fasteners to ensure that they're tight. Do not overtighten any screws that thread into nylon or composite material, or the material may strip out. Screws threaded into nylon or composite material need only be tightened snugly. If you have difficulty sliding the receiver antenna wire through the antenna support tube, first pull the antenna wire through your fingers several times to straighten it, then lightly wet the antenna wire with glass cleaner. The glass cleaner will make the antenna wire slide through the antenna support tube much easier. Leave any excess antenna wire hanging from the top of the antenna support tube. Under no circumstances should you cut the antenna wire shorter. During use, the transmitter antenna should be extended fully. Always make sure that you install the body when driving your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck. If your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck flips over, the body will help protect the chassis and its components. Before checking the steering and throttle controls, we recommend placing your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck on a car stand so that the wheels are off the ground. This will ensure your safety and the safety of your model while testing the throttle control. If the motor does not seem to be producing full power, double-check that your battery pack is fully charged, double-check that the transmitter's throttle channel Forward EPA is set to Maximum, then calibrate the throttle control range. Make sure you always use fresh and/or fully charged transmitter batteries (if using Ni-Cds or Ni-MHs). Never allow the transmitter batteries to run low or you could lose control of the model. The battery pack should be discharged by running the model until it stops, then recharged. This will ensure the battery pack is not over-charged. Allow the battery pack to cool down prior to recharging it. The battery pack will take approximately 4 hours to charge. Do not charge the battery pack for any longer than 5 hours or the battery pack could be damaged. pREpARING TO DRIvE YOUR TEmpEST STADIUm TRUCk...

Do not make any changes that are more than 3 degrees from the initial settings or the handling characteristics of your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck will become very poor. n Adjusting Toe Angle - Front The toe angle is the angle of both front tires (or rear tires) to each other, when viewed from above. 'Toe-in' is when the front of both tires point toward each other and 'toe-out' is when the front of both tires point away from each other. F or the front tires, toe-in will make the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck track (run) straighter, but the steering will be more sensitive. Toe-out will desensitize the steering, making the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck a little more driver-friendly. Toe-in on the rear tires is fixed at approximately 2 degrees. This will give the rear end a little more 'bite' (traction). recommended initial settings 1 ~ 2 degrees toe-in on the front to provide stability and increase steering sensitivity. Toe-in on the rear tires is fixed at approximately 2 degrees and is not adjustable. Adding more than 3 degrees of toe-in or toe-out on the front will result in excessive loss of speed and erratic handling. Toe adjustments should be measured with the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck at its normal ride height.
  • Page 18 ChASSIS TUNING GUIDE n Adjusting Camber Angle - Front and Rear Camber is referred to as the amount of the tire's surface that contacts the ground. Tires that are exactly perpendicular to the ground have 0 degrees of camber. If the top of the tire leans in toward the chassis, the tire has negative camber. If the top of the tire leans out away from the chassis, the tire has positive camber. C amber angle should be adjusted to ensure maximum tire contact between the ground and the tires for your particular track. You can check to ensure maximum tire contact by first cleaning your tires, then by running your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck on your track. After running, check the dirt and/or wear marks on the tire. Adjust the camber angle if the dirt and/or wear marks are more toward the outside or the inside of the tire. recommended initial settings For driving on smooth surfaces set both the front and back tires at 0 degrees. For driving on rough surfaces set the front tires at -1 degree and the back tires at -2 degrees. Camber settings should be measured with the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck at its normal ride height. PRO TIP: For more precise camber adjustments, use a dedicated camber gauge, available at most hobby retailers. q To increase positive camber angle, use an adjustable wrench to turn the upper Positive turnbuckles and lengthen them to push the top of the tires out.
  • Page 19 We recommend initially leaving the droop screws at the factory setting. q T o decrease droop, use a 2.0mm hex wrench to tighten (turn clockwise) the droop screw in the top of each lower suspension arm. To increase droop, use a 2.0mm hex wrench to loosen (turn counter-clockwise) the droop screw in the top of each lower suspension arm. n Adjusting Shock Mounting Positions - Front and Rear The Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck shock towers feature several different mounting positions for the shocks. By changing the location of the upper shock mounts you can make the shock feel stiffer or softer as the truck rolls from side-to-side. In general, moving the shocks toward the outside will make the shock stiffer and moving the shock toward the inside will make the shock softer. You will need to experiment with these settings to find something that suits both your track and driving style. A good starting point is to adjust the rear shocks. Moving the rear shocks toward the outside will give more 'bite' (traction) in the turns. However, depending on how you drive, you might want to move the shocks toward the middle. This will give a more 'plush' suspension. recommended initial settings We recommend initially leaving the upper shock mounting positions in the factory locations. q R emove the 3 x 18.5mm Round Head screw and the 3mm lock nut from the upper shock mount, then remove the shock (with the shock mounting stud attached) from the shock tower.
  • Page 20 The Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck features a 23T pinion gear that will work well for bashing. If you're racing your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck, you will probably want to experiment with different pinion gears. In general, using a smaller pinion gear will result in quicker acceleration, but slower top speed, and using a larger pinion gear will result in faster top speed, but slower acceleration. It's all a matter of experimenting with different pinion gears to find the one that best suits your track and driving style. The Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck uses a Metric 48 Pitch pinion gear with a 1/8" (3mm) bore. This means that many 1/10th scale after-market pinion gears can be used. IMPORTANT: After installing a different pinion gear, you should readjust the gear mesh prior to driving your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck. For more information, see pages 22 ~ 23. recommended initial settings We recommend initially using the stock 23T pinion gear already installed. q Remove the two 3 x 10mm Countersunk screws and the steel motor mount support plate from the bottom of the chassis, then remove the motor.
  • Page 21 Adjusting Gearing, Continued..q Using a 1.5mm hex wrench, loosen the grub screw in the side of the pinion gear, then remove the pinion gear from the motor shaft. q Install the new pinion gear, making sure that the face of the pinion gear is flush with the end of the motor shaft and that the grub screw is tightened firmly against the flat spot on the motor shaft. q Reinstall the motor into the chassis. Installation is the reverse of removal. Again, after installing a different pinion gear, you should readjust the gear mesh prior to driving your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck. For more information, see pages 22 ~ 23. n Adjusting the Differentials - Front and Rear The Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck features front and rear bevel gear differentials. Both differentials are packed with differential grease that works well for most driving conditions. You can make fine-tuned adjustments to each differential by removing them from the chassis, opening them up and changing the type and/or amount of differential grease. F ront and Rear Differentials: Adding heavier grease (or packing with more grease) will tighten the differentials and adding lighter grease (or packing with less grease) will loosen the differentials. If your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck feels loose (uncontrollable) during turns, you can tighten the front differential or loosen the rear differential. If your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck is...
  • Page 22: Maintenance Guide

GUIDE Following a simple maintenance guide on a regular schedule will ensure that your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck operates in top condition every time you use it. It is strongly recommended. Check the chassis for any loose screws, especially the motor pinion gear and the differential pinion output joint grub screws. Tighten them if necessary. Any screws that are threaded directly into metal should be secured in place with threadlock. This will prevent the screws from loosening during use. Screws threaded into nylon or composite material do not require threadlock. Do not overtighten any screws that thread into nylon or composite material or the material may strip out. Screws threaded into nylon or composite material need only be tightened snugly. Once in a while, remove the wheels and clean the wheel bearings using a bearing cleaner. This will remove any dust and grit that may, over time, damage the bearings. After cleaning the bearings, oil them using a good quality bearing oil. Never run the bearings dry or damage to the bearings will result. Check the condition of the transmitter batteries each time you drive your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck. If you think they might need replacement or recharging, do so before driving your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck again. After a period of time the chassis will accumulate a lot of dirt and debris. This buildup should be cleaned off using a soft brush and compressed air. After cleaning the chassis and motor with compressed air, apply a couple of drops of lubricating oil to the motor bearings. Check the suspension and steering system to ensure both are working smoothly without any binding. Check the electronics for any signs of damage. This includes the steering servo, receiver, motor, wiring and electronic speed control. n Adjusting the Gear Mesh When you change the pinion gear and/or the spur gear, you must readjust the gear mesh to ensure proper operation. In addition, the gear mesh should be checked periodically. During prolonged use the motor may shift slightly, causing the gear mesh to be incorrect. If the gear mesh is too loose, the gears may strip out. If the gear mesh is set too tight, the gears will bind, causing damage to the gears and/or the motor.
  • Page 23: Troubleshooting Guide

Loosen the two 3 x 10mm Countersunk motor mounting screws on the bottom of the chassis, then push the motor away from the spur gear. q Slide a narrow strip of notebook paper (about 2" long) between the spur gear and the pinion gear, then push the motor toward the spur gear with enough pressure so that the paper is crinkled. Tighten the two motor mounting screws firmly. Rotate the two rear wheels forward at the same time (or push the truck forward) to draw the piece of notebook paper into the gears. q Rotate the two rear wheels backward (or push the truck backward) to remove the strip of notebook paper, then push the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck forward for a short distance to check the gear mesh. The gear mesh should feel slightly 'ratchety' and the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck should not be difficult to push. If the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck is difficult to push, the gear mesh is too tight. If you don't feel any resistance when you push the Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck, the gear mesh is too loose. Adjust the gear mesh again, using a different thickness of paper. q When satisfied with the gear mesh adjustment, double-check that the two motor mounting screws are tightened firmly, then reinstall the gear cover. Installation is the reverse of removal. TROUBLEShOOTING GUIDE This Troubleshooting Guide has been provided to help you diagnose and solve most problems that you may encounter with your Tempest 4WD Brushless Stadium Truck chassis components, brushless motor, brushless electronic speed control and radio control system.
