Nikon D5100 Experience
Figure 40 – Aperture set at f/2.8, shallow depth of field – Image in focus at middle distance only
and becomes dramatically out of focus closer and further from the plaque.
Fill the Frame
Determine your subject, what attracted you to the scene, and fill your frame with that subject.
Zoom in close to eliminate elements in the scene that are not important or are not part of the
story. Or eliminate these elements by changing your position or point of view and by framing
the shot so that those elements do not appear in your frame (see Figure 41). Filling the frame
does not however always mean zooming in as close as you can. If, for example, the subject is a
person and their relationship to their environment, it can mean using a wide angle lens to capture
the person and their surroundings.
Position and Point of View
Change your position and point of view to create more interesting and varied compositions.
Move around the subject to try to discover different, more interesting compositions, and try
higher or lower points of view so that you are looking down or up at your subject (see Figure
41). Shoot the image through or past foreground objects to help pull the viewer into the scene –
for example, shoot the subject through a window or looking over the shoulder of a person in the
foreground.
