Chapter Introduction to the Sylantro Communications System This chapter describes the features and benefits of the Sylantro Communications System and the 4-port adapter. The following topics are covered: “Introduction” on this page. “Features and Benefits” on page 1-2. “Understanding the 4-port Adapter” on page 1-3.
Features and Benefits The Sylantro Communications System lets service providers offer voice services ranging from traditional business telephone features to value-added telecommunications applications. The Sylantro Communications System hardware and software provide the following features and benefits: In-band dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) support for touch-tone dialing.
Understanding the 4-port Adapter The Sylantro adapter must be installed at the client site to enable service for analog and digital phones. The Sylantro adapter, installed at the customer site, converts voice traffic into IP packets for transmission to the carrier network. The Sylantro adapter turns your telephone into the ultimate “thin client”...

Ethernet switch within the customer site. Within the customer site, the adapter is connected to the Ethernet switch closest to the entry point. All of the Sylantro-hosted telephones are then connected to the adapter using a standard telephone cable. Note: Do not install the adapter behind a customers network firewall.
Preparing for 4-port Adapter Installation Cabling Requirements Each 4-port adapter connects directly to a customer’s LAN, requiring a standard RJ-45 connection from the back of the adapter to a LAN port. Bandwidth Requirements The end customer’s LAN needs to have available bandwidth of at least 200 kbps per phone.
ProCom. Serial Cable Specifications The serial cable that connects to the 4-port adapter is a custom cable that you need to make based on the specifications in this section. One end of the serial cable requires a DB9 female connector. The other end requires a male 3.5mm (1/8 inch) stereo phone plug.
