Glossary
ASCII. American National Standard Code for
Information Interchange. The standard code using a
coded character set consisting of 7-bit coded characters
(8 bits including parity check). The ASCn set consists
of control characters and graphic characters.
backup. To duplicate data from a fixed disk drive (or
diskette) to a diskette. This action insures availability
of data in the event of loss or damage to the original
data.
BASIC. (beginner's all-purpose symbolic instruction
code). A program language that uses common English
words.
byte. In the IBM Portable Personal Computer, a
sequence of eight adjacent binary digits that are
operated on as a unit and that constitute the smallest
addressable unit in the system.
control character. A character whose occurrence in a
particular context initiates, modifies, or stops a control
operation.
cps. Characters per second. A term used to express the
printing speed of a printer.
cursor. A movable spot of light on the screen of a
display, usually indicating where the next character is to
be entered, replaced, or deleted.
