orifice
A small hole through which pressurized ink extends in a
filament.
parameter
An item in the system software for which a value can be
specified.
PC
The component of the printing system that accepts input data from
tape or disk, formats the data according to job setup instructions, and
sends character-coded image data to the printer. The system controller is
the primary operator interface to the printer.
phase defect
A printing problem that is caused by an improper charge
phase setting.
piece
A discrete segment of substrate upon which the image is printed.
For example, an envelope.
power-on cycle (POC)
performs when it is turned on. The procedures include an internal
diagnostics test of the hardware, the warming of fluids, and a printhead
clean.
print array
The 1.06-in. (2.69-cm) line of holes (orifices) in the
printhead through which ink jets are formed to create an image.
print density
The number of dots of ink used to produce a dot of ink on
the substrate.
printhead
The part of the printer that forms charged ink drops, allows
uncharged drops to fall on the substrate, and recovers charged drops for
return to the fluid cabinet. The printhead receives data in bitmap format
and, using ink and charge voltages, creates inkjet images.
print width
The maximum width of the area that can be printed by the
printhead, usually provided in inches or dots.
printhead height
The distance between the bottom of the printhead
and the substrate.
replenisher
A fluid used to maintain the proper concentration of ink.
resolution
The degree of sharpness of an image, measured in dpi.
shrunken print
A printing problem characterized by shortened (or
shrunken) characters that occurs when tach and cue parameters are set
incorrectly or the document transport is not operating properly.
streaker
A recurring streak of ink (or solid black line) caused by one or
more jets printing continuously or by ink dripping from a part of the
printhead, creating a line (streak) on the substrate. Streakers are caused
by improper voltage levels and dirty printheads.
substrate
The surface on which an image is printed. The substrate can
be a continuous sheet (web) or separate pieces of various types of
material.
substrate length
The length of a piece of substrate.
swabbing
Using a replenisher-soaked swab to rub the catcher face
and orifice plate with the eyelid removed and the service catchpan
installed. The printer should be in Normal Up state 12 (crossflush) or 13
(jets of replenisher).
The sequence of procedures the printer
