    The administrator can change the mode of a user station to Extender or Desktop via serial port CLI. Features and Benefits The HMX 1050 user station is the user station hardware that is located at the user's desk and connects via TCP/IP to an HMIQDI also located on the same TCP/IP local area network.

  • Page 9 The HMX 1050 user station can operate on a network connection of 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps. For optimum performance a 1 Gbps connection is recommended. For more information see Chapter 2.
  • Page 10 HMX 1050 User Station Installer/User Guide Interface to external system The HMX 1050 user station interfaces to a DHCP server. In Desktop and Extender Modes, the user station and HMIQDI can obtain their IP address data from a DHCP server.
  • Page 11 Data can be both read from and written to these mass storage devices. You can connect both a removable drive and an external drive at any one time to the HMX 1050 user station. The transfer speed between the mass storage device and the remote computer is dependant on the Ethernet network.
  • Page 12 1050 user station. Both CRT and flat-panel LCD monitors are supported, and can be connected to the HMX 1050 user station via a DVI-I video connector. VGA monitors can be attached to the system by using a DVI to VGA adaptor. The system supports DDC version 2B.

    To avoid potentially fatal shock hazard and possible damage to equipment, please observe the following precautions: • Do not use a 2-wire extension cord in any Avocent product configuration. • Test AC outlets at the computer and monitor for proper polarity and grounding.

    CHA PTER Installation Getting Started Before installing your HMX 1050 user station, refer to the list below to ensure that you have all the items necessary for installation. NOTE: For installation of the HMX Manager, see the HMX Manager Installer/User Guide.

    However, if you choose the point-to-point configuration you can install only one HMIQDI and HMX 1050 user station pair on a subnet. If you use this configuration you must also locate both the HMIQDI and the HMX 1050 user station on the same subnet.
  • Page 17 Before connecting the HMIQDI to the remote computer, ensure that the resolution and the refresh rate of the remote computer are supported by the HMX 1050 user station system. Set the screen resolution and refresh rate of the remote computer (see Appendix A). Unsupported settings will cause blank video at the user station.
  • Page 18 Turn on the computer. Route the other end of the UTP cable to the location you have chosen for the HMX 1050 user station. If necessary you can extend the UTP cable via junctions or a hub - subject to normal Ethernet cabling practices.
  • Page 19 Connect the UTP cable to the RJ-45 port on the back of the HMX 1050 user station. Turn on the HMX 1050 user station. A connection will be automatically established with the remote computer. NOTE: VGA monitors can be connected to the HMX 1050 user station by using a DVI-I to VGA adaptor.

    Ethernet network. In this case, it is important for each unit to be configured with a unique IP address. NOTE: In Desktop and Extender Modes the HMX 1050 user station and HMIQDI can obtain their IP address data from a DHCP server.
  • Page 22 The HMX 1050 user station has been pre-configured with factory-default network settings. If you install only one HMX 1050 user station on a subnet, you do not need to change these default network settings. If you install multiple units on the same subnet, you will need to assign a unique IP address to each unit or configure them for DHCP.

    LED Identification Front panel There are two blue LEDs on the front panel of the HMX 1050 user station. The PWR LED will light up when the HMX 1050 user station has been powered up. The ACTIVE LED will blink slowly until the HMX 1050 user station establishes a connection with the HMIQDI.

    HMX 1050 User Station Installer/User Guide Rear panel Two LEDs are built into both the RJ-45 connector on the rear of the HMX 1050 user station, and into the RJ-45 connector on the HMIQDI. The following table illustrates their operation.
  • Page 27 Using the HMX Manager, an administrator can enable Auto-Login Mode. For details see the HMX Manager Installer/User Guide. Once this step is complete, the HMX 1050 user station is reset by the HMX Manager and it attempts to connect to the specified HMIQDI. A login progress message will be seen at this point.

For optimum performance, keep your firmware current. The OSD also enables you to view the IP address and MAC address of both the HMX 1050 user station and HMIQDI.

    Configure the HMIQDI for normal aspect or wide screen resolutions Accessing the serial menu You can access the serial menu via the serial port on the back of the HMX 1050 user station. All terminal commands are executed through a terminal or PC running HyperTerminal® emulation software or equivalent.
  • Page 32 Select the Receiver or Transmitter menu. You will be prompted to enter a password. Type the password and press Enter NOTE: If there is no HMIQDI connected to the HMX 1050 user station, an error message will display and you will be returned to the Appliance Selection Menu.

    HMX 1050 user station and HMIQDI. You can change the network settings (from the default values) for your system using the serial menu. If you wish, you can place the HMX 1050 user station on a different subnet from the HMIQDI.

You will be automatically returned to the Appliance Selection Menu screen. The connection to the HMIQDI will be automatically restored. To access the Network Configuration Menu in Desktop Mode: 24.
  • Page 38 NOTE: The Reset option in the Receiver Network Configuration Menu applies only to network settings. Choose Receiver IP Address. Type a valid IP address. Press Enter to return to the HMX 1050 user station Network Configuration Menu. Choose Receiver Netmask.

    NOTE: If the HMIQDI receives its power from an external power supply, disconnect the HMIQDI from that external power supply. Choose option 1 to access the HMX 1050 user station menu. If the password option is enabled, you will be prompted for a password. See Authentication on page 37.
  • Page 42 Power up the HMIQDI. The HMX 1050 user station will detect and save the IP address of the connected Transmitter. The Transmitter IP Configuration Menu will refresh, and the current IP address of the connected Transmitter will be displayed beside menu option 1.

    By default, two passwords are required to access the HMX 1050 user station via the serial menu. One password is for access to the serial menus that control the HMX 1050 user station. The other password is for access to the serial menus that control the HMIQDI. In both cases, the default password is “password”.
  • Page 44 Enter If you lose your HMX 1050 user station password: If you lose your HMX 1050 user station password, you can reset the system to the default password with the help of Avocent Technical Support. Activate the serial menu as described in Accessing the serial menu on page 25.

Authentication for the HMIQDI You can change the password settings for the HMIQDI through the serial menu using the HMIQDI Security Configuration Menu.

    Avocent. For optimum system performance keep your firmware versions current. NOTE: Do not use software (XON/XOFF) flow control when using XMODEM. NOTE: It is recommended that you flash upgrade the HMIQDI before you flash upgrade the HMX 1050 user station.
  • Page 48 When the transfer has completed, a message will display stating “Firmware update successful. Resetting Appliance...” During reset the HMIQDI will drop the connection to the HMX 1050 user station. A second system message will appear that states “Connection to the HMIQDI is lost”.

To view a full list of the factory default settings, see Factory Default Settings on page 65.

    The HMX 1050 user station is designed to automatically establish a connection between the HMX 1050 user station and the remote computer. By default, if the HMX 1050 user station cannot immediately establish a connection with the remote computer it will retry once per second until a connection is successfully established.
