TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS

ENGINE WILL NOT START

Possible Cause
Fuel valve is OFF
Throttle lever is in the wrong position
Flywheel brake lever is not engaged
Out of fuel
Bad fuel; mower stored without treating or
draining gasoline, or refueled with bad
gasoline.
Spark plug is faulty, fouled, or improperly
gapped
Spark plug is wet with fuel (flooded engine)
Fuel filter is clogged, carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

LOSS OF POWER

Possible Cause
Throttle is not set to FAST
Grass is too tall or wet
Mower deck is clogged
Air filter is clogged
Bad fuel; mower stored without treating or
draining the gasoline, or refueled with bad
gasoline.
Fuel filter is clogged, carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.
Correction
Turn the fuel valve ON (page 8).
Move the throttle lever to the CHOKE
position, unless the engine is warm (page 19).
Engage the flywheel brake lever (page 21).
Refuel (page 46).
Drain the fuel tank and carburetor (page 51).
Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 46).
Gap or replace the spark plug (page 39).
Dry and reinstall the spark plug.
Take the mower to an authorized Honda
service dealer for repair.
Correction
Move the throttle to FAST (page 21).
Raise the cutting height (page 10), cut a
narrower swath (page 26), use a slower
ground speed (page 26), cut more frequently
when the grass is dry, or move the
Clip Director® knob toward the BAG position
(page 14).
Clear out the mower deck (page 27).
Clean or replace the air filter (page 38).
Drain the fuel tank and carburetor (page 51).
Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 46).
Take the mower to an authorized Honda
service dealer for repair.
