Periodically c heck all fasteners andmakesurethesearetight.
ENGINE MAINTENANCE
SparkPlug
Forgoodperformance, the sparkplug mustbe properly gapped andfreeof
deposits. R eplace t he sparkplug annually.
1.
Disconnect the capfrom the sparkplug,andremove anydirt from the spark
plugarea.
2.
Use the propersizesparkplug wrench to remove the sparkplug.
NOTE: Replace w ith aChampion ® RC12YC sparkplug.
3.
Check thegapwitha wiregauge. S eeFigure 17.Spark pluggapshouldbe
0.020in(0.51mm).If necessary, reset t he gap.
4.
Installandtightenthe sparkplugto the recommended t orque(180Ib-in [20
Nm]).
5.
Attachthe sparkplug capto the sparkplug.
Air (:leaner
Adirty air cleaner w ill restrictairflow to thecarburetorandcause poorengine
performance. Inspect t he filter eachtime the engineisoperated. Y ouwill needto
cleanthe filter morefrequentlyif youoperate the engineinverydustyareas.
Clean the air cleaner e very50 hoursofoperationor oncea season. R eplace t he air
cleaner a nnually.
Neverstart or run the engine with the air cleanerassemblyor the air filter
removed.
flOTE: D onot usepressurized a iror solvents to cleanthe filter. Pressurized air can
damage thefilter andsolvents will dissolve the filter.

Remove t he fastener a ndair cleaner c over. S eeFigure 18.
2.
Remove t he pre-deaner(if equipped) a ndfilter.
3.
Toloosen debris,gentlytap the filter on a hardsurface. I f filter isexcessively
dirty,replace with anewfilter.

Washthe pre-cleaner i n liquiddetergent a ndwaterandallowit to
thoroughlyair dry.Donotoil the pre-cleaner.
5.
Assemble the dry pre-cleaner t o the filter.
6.
Installthe filter andpre-cleaner i ntothe base. M akesurefilter fits securely
in the base.
7.
Installair filter coverandsecure with fastener. M akesurethe fastener i s
tight.
