Seating System (WHIPS)
represents an extraordinary auto-
motive safety design advancement.
This system, unique to Volvo, is
designed to provide markedly
better protection from neck and
back injuries in the event of a
rear impact.
Based on exhaustive study
of body geometry and accident
dynamics, WHIPS is designed
to diffuse the violent energy transfer
resulting from a rear impact that
often produces serious neck and
back trauma.
Should a Cross Country be struck
from behind, the front seat backrest
and head restraint move backward
in parallel, while the occupant's
head and upper torso are evenly,
firmly and uniformly supported.
The backrest is designed to then
tip backward to help prevent
the damaging forward whiplash
movement.
