Cutting Blades

ARNING: Be sure to shut the engine
off, remove ignition key,disconnect the
spark plug wire(s) and ground against
the engine to prevent unintended starting
before removing the cutting blade(s) for
sharpening or replacement. Protect your
hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to
grasp the cutting blade.
WARNING: Periodically inspect the blade
spindles for cracks or damage, especially
if you strike a foreign object. Replace
immediately if damaged.
The bladesmay be removedas follows.
1. Removethe deck from beneaththe tractor,(referto
CuttingDeckRemoval o n page23) thengently flip
thedeck overto expose its underside.
2. Placea blockof wood betweenthe centerdeck hous-
ing baffle and the cuttingbladeto act as a stabilizer.
See Fig. 6-4.
3. Removethe hexflangenutthat securesthe bladeto
the spindleassembly.See Fig.6-4.
4. Toproperlysharpenthe cuttingblades,removeequal
amountsof metalfrom bothends of the bladesalong
thecutting edges,parallelto the trailingedge,at a
250to 300angle.
IMPORTANT: I fthe cuttingedgeof the blade hasalready
been sharpenedto within 1 5/8" from theedge,or if any
metal separation is present,replacethe bladeswith new
ones. See Fig.6-5.
• It is importantthat eachcuttingblade edge be ground
equallyto maintainproperblade balance.
• Whenreplacingtheblade,be sureto installthe blade
with the sideof the blade marked"Bottom" (or with
a part numberstampedin it) facingthe groundwhen
the moweris in the operatingposition.
IMPORTANT:Usea torquewrenchto tighten the blade
spindlehexflangenutto between70 foot-poundsand 90
foot-pounds.
Fuses
A fuse is installedin yourtractor'swiringharnessto
protectthe tractor'selectricalsystemfrom damage
causedby excessiveamperage.
If theelectricalsystemdoesnot function,or your
tractor'senginewill not crank,firstcheckto be certain
that the fuse hasnot blown.
• It caneither be foundunderthe hood mountedbehind
thetop of the dash panelon the supportbar,or under
the seat mountedto the insideof the tractorframe
next to the batterytray.
IMPORTANT:Alwaysusea fuse with the sameamper-
age capacityfor replacement.
