Blade Care
/
WARNING:Whenremovingcutting
blade for sharpeningor replacement,
protectyourhandswith a pairof heavy
glovesor usea heavyrag to hold blade.
1. Disconnectsparkplug wirefrom spark plug.Turn
moweron its side makingsurethat the air filter and
the carburetorare up.
2. Removebolt, bell washer,blade,and bladeadapter
from the enginecrankshaft.See Figure5-3.
NOTE:When removing these items,the pulleysand
washersmayalso breakfree fromthe crankshaft.Be
sureto makenoteof the orientationof these itemsfor
reassembly.

3. The bladecan be sharpenedwith a fileor on a grind-
ing wheel.Do notattemptto sharpenthe blade while
it is still on the mower.Whensharpeningblade,follow
originalangle of grind.Grind cuttingedgesequallyto
keep bladebalanced.
4. Removebladefrom the adapterfor testingbalance.
Balancethe bladeon a roundshaftscrewdriver to
check. Removemetalfrom the heavysideuntil it
balancesevenly.

WARNING:An unbalanced bladewill
causeexcessive vibrationwhen rotating
at highspeeds.It maycausedamage
to mower, and couldbreak causing
personalinjury.

Lubricatetheenginecrankshaftand the inner surface
of the blade adapterwith lightoil. Slide the blade
adapteronto the enginecrankshaft.Placethe blade
on theadaptersuch that the sideof the blade marked
"Bottom"(or with part number)facesthe groundwhen
the mowerisin the operatingposition.Makesurethat
blade is alignedand seatedon bladeadapterflanges.
6. Placebell washeron the blade.Align notcheson the
blade bell supportwith small holesin blade.Replace
hex boltand tighten hexbolt to torque:450 in.Ibs.
rain.,600 in.Ibs.max.
Toensuresafe operationof yourmower,periodically
checkthe blade boltfor correcttorque.
Belt Care
1. Removetwo shoulderscrewssecuringfrontdrive
cover to mowerdeck.See Figure5-4. Pressinwardon
sides of front drivecoverand releasetabs that secure
it to the heightadjusterbrackets.Removedrivecover
from mower.
2. Pull up on the belt keeperwireand pivotit out away
from the drivepulley.See Figure5-4 inset.
3. Rollthe beltoff the transmissionpulley.Tip mower
on its sidewith the air filter up to access beltfrom
undersideof mower.Slide beltoff of enginepulleyand
threadthroughthe openingin the beltkeeperbracket.

Thenremovethe belt from aroundthe bladeby
removingoverone end at a time.See Figure5-5.
4. Replacewith newbelt, workingaround bladeand
up throughthe beltkeeperbracket.Makesurebelt
is firmlyseatedon engine pulleywhile pullingfrom
the othersideand slidingit aroundthe transmis-
sion pulley.Pivotthe belt keeperwire backinto its
operatingpostionand snapintothe slot provided.
Reassemble front drivecover.
WARNING
When removing
the cutting blade
for sharpening or
replacement or
when sliding the belt
around it, protect
your hands with a
pair of heavy gloves
or use a heavy rag to
hold the blade.
An unbalanced blade
will cause excessive
vibration when rotat-
ing at high speeds. It
may cause damage
to mower, and could
break causing per-
sonal injury.
