_,WARNING
At the time of manufacture thiswater heaterwasprovided with
a combination tempe ratu.re-pressures relief valvecertifiedbya
nationally recognized testing laboratorythat maintains periodic
inspection of productionof listed equipmentor materials, as
meatingthe requirements for ReliefValvesand Automatic Gas
ShutoffDevices for Hot Water SupplySystems, a nd the latest
edition of ANSI Z21,22and the cederequirements of ASME.If
replaced, the valvemust meet the requirements of localcedes,
but not lessthan a combination temperature and pressure relief
valvecertifiedasmeetingtile requirements for ReliefValves and
AutomaticGas ShutoffDevices for Hot Water SupplySystems,
ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recognizedtesting laboratory that
maintains periedicinspection of production of listedequipment
or materials.
The valvemustbe marked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostaticwort_ng pressureof the
water heater (150 Ibsdsq.in.) and a dischargecapacity not
lessthan the water heater input rate as shownon the model
rating plate. (Electricheaters - watts dividedby 1000 x 3415
equaJ BTU/Hr, rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority,whilemandatingthe useof a
temperatumt)ressure relief valvecomplying with ANSI Z21,22
and ASME,may requirea valvemodeldifferent from the onefur-
nished with the water heater.
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements must be satisfied by
the installeror end userof the water heaterwith a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure relief valveinstalledin the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factoryfur-
nished valve.
Forsafeoperationof the water heater, the relief valvemustnot
be removedfrom it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressurerelief valvemustbe installeddi_'tly
intothe Erringof the water heaterdesignated for the reliefvalve.
Position the valvedownwardandprovidetubingsothat anydis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at anydistance
belowthe structuralfloor,Be certainthat no contact ismade
with anyliveelectrical p art. The discharge opening mustnot be
blockedor reduced in size underany circumstance_ Excessive
length,over30 feet, or useof more than fourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethe discharge c apacity of the valve.
No valveor other obstro_on isto be placedbetweenthe relief
valveand the tank. Do not connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunless a 6"air gapisprovided. Topreventbodily injury,haz-
ard to life,or pmpertydamage, the relief valvemustbe allowed
to discharge water in quantitiesshouldcircumstances demand.
If the dischargepipe is not connected to a drain or other
suitable means, the water flow may cause property
damage.
The DischargePipe:
Must not be smallerin sizethan the outtet pipe sizeof the
valve,or haveanyreducingcouplings or other restriction_
Must not be plugged or Mucked.
Must be of material listedfor hot water distribution.
Must be installedso asto allowcompletedrainageof both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Must terminate at an adequatedrain.
Must not haveanyvalvebetween the relief valveand tank.
AWARNING
HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCKI Before removing I
any access panels or servicing the water heater, make I
sure the electrical supply to the water heater m turned
"OFF". Failure to do this could result in DEATH, SERI-
OUS BODILY INJUR_,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem-
perature which will satisfyspace.heating,clothes washing,
dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald and
permanently injure you upon contact. Some people are
more likely to be permanently injured by hot water than
others. These include the elderly, children, the infirm, or
physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot
water in your home fits into one of these groups or if
there is a local code or state law requiring a certain tem-
perature water at the hot water tap, then you must take
specialprecautions. In addition to usingthe lowest possi-
ble temperature setting that satisfies your hot water
needs, a means such as a mixing valve, shall be used at
the hot water taps used by these people or at the water
heater. Mixing valvesare available at plumbing supply or
hardware stores. Follow manufacturers instructions for
installation of the valves. Before chang!ng the factory
setting on the thermostat,
read the
Temperature
Regulation" section in this manual.
AWARNING
WATER HEATERS EQUIPPED
FOR ONE VOLTAGE
ONLY: This water heater is equipped for one type voltage
only. Check the rating plate near the bottom access panel
for the correct voltage. DO NOT use this water heater
with any voltage other than the one shownon the model
rating plate. Failure to use the correct voltage can cause
problems which can result in DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY
INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. If you have any ques-
tions or doubts consultyour el_ric
company.

water. An electrical short or malfunction could occur. The
water heater shouldbe replaced.

A CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplished in such a manner
that if the tank or any connections shouldleak, the flow of
water will not cause damage to the structure. When such
locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan should
be installed under the water heater. Drain pans are avail-
able at your local Sears Store. Such a drain pan must be
piped to an adequate drain. Under no circumstances is
the manufacturer or Sears to be held liable for any water
