Cleaning the airfilter:
Adirty airfilter d ecreases

tion and harmful emissions.
Always

1. Clean the cover and the area
around ittokeep d ebris from falling
into the carburetor
chamber when
the cover isremoved.
2. Remove parts a sillustrated.
NOTE: Donot c lean f ilter i ngasoline or
other flammable
solvent. Doing s ocan
create a fire hazard orproduce harmful
evaporative
emissions.
3. Wash t he filter i nsoap a nd water.
4. Allow filter t odry.
5. Add afew drops o foil t othe filter;
squeeze filter t odistribute
oil.
6. Replace parts.
REPLACE
SPARK PLUG
Replace spark p lug each y ear t oen-
sure theengine starts e asier and runs
better. Set s park p lug gap at0.025 i n.
Ignition timing i sfixed, nonadjustable.
1.Twist, then pull o ff s park p lug boot.
2. Remove
spark p lug f rom cylinder
and discard.
3. Replace with Champion
RCJ-SY
spark p lug and tighten with a3/4 in.
socket wrench (10-12 ft.-Ibs).
4. Reinstall
the spark p lug boot.
REPLACE
FUEL F ILTER
To replace fuel filter, drain u nit b yrun-
ning itdry offuel, then remove fuel cap
and itsconnected
retainer from tank.
Pull filter from tank and remove itfrom
the fuel l ine. Install new fuel f ilter o n
fuel l ine; reinstall parts.
Werecommend

Old fuel, adirty airfilter, adirty f uel f il-
ter, o rflooding may give theimpression
ofanimproperly
adjusted carburetor.
Check these c onditions
before adjust-
ing the carburetor.
The carburetor
has been c arefully set
atthe factory. Adjustments
may be
necessary
ifyou notice any ofthe fol-
lowing conditions:
• Engine will n ot i dle. See IDLE S PEED
and MIXTURE
under adjusting
procedure.
• Engine dies orhesitates instead of
accelerating.
See ACCELERATION
CHECK
under adjusting procedure.
• Loss o fpower. See MIXTURE
under
adjusting procedure.
ADJUSTING
PROCEDURE
CAUTION: Do not f orce p lastic limiter
caps beyond the built-in s tops o rdam-
age will o ccur.
Initial Settings
1.Turn both mixture screws (Land H)
counterclockwise
until they stop.
2. Turn t he idle speed s crew clockwise
until itstops. Now turn counterclock-
wise 4 1/2 turns.
3. Start motor and letitrun for3min-
utes, then proceed tothe adjust
screws according
tothe instructions
below. Ifengine performance

Allow engine to idle. If the blade
moves,
idle speed is too fast. If the en-
gine stalls, idle speed is too slow.
