Step 4 Focus and Shoot

Note
on Recording
Images
and
Saving
Movies
The indicator
showing
the number
of exposures
remaining
or the indicator
showing
the maximum
movie
length
flashes while
images are being
recorded
or while
a movie is being saved. Do notopen
the battery-chamber/memory
card slot cover or remove
the battery
or memory
card while
an
indicator
is flashing.
Doing this could result in I¢_ssof data, or in damage
to the camera
or the
memory
card.

Autofocus
Auto_cus
may not per_rm
as expected
in the _llowing
situations.
In some rare cases, the subject
may not be in focus despite
the fact that the focus area or focus indicator
lights
in green.
• Subject
is very dark
• Objects
of sharply
differing
brightness
are included
in the scene (e.g. the sun behind
the subject
makes that subject appear
very dark)
• No contrast
between
the subject and surroundings
(e.g. a portrait
subject, wearing
a white
shirt, is
standing
in front of a white
wall)
• Several objects
are at different
distances
from the camera
(e.g., an animal
inside a cage)
• Subjects
with repeating
patterns
(window
blinds,
buildings
with multiple
rows of similarly
shaped
windows,
etc.)
• Subject
is moving
rapidly
In these situations,
try pressing
the shutter
release button
halfway
to refocus
several times, or focus
on another
subject
and use focus lock (_81).
When
using focus lock, be sure that the distance
between
the camera
and the subject with which
focus was locked
is the same as that for the actual
subject.
The camera
can also focus using manual
focus (_66,
_2).

The
Subject
Is Too
Close
to
the
Camera
If the camera
does not focus, try shooting
with _
(macro
dose
up) (_67)
in the focus mode, or
Close-up
((_43)
scene mode.

AF-assist
Illuminator
In dark places, the AF assist illuminator
1_99/may
light when
the shutter
release button
is pressed
halfway.

To Make
Sure
You
Do
Not
Miss
a Shot
If you are concerned
that you might
miss a shot, press the shutter
release button
all the way without
first pressing
it halfway.
