The bobbin housing on the Singer 3116 Simple will not rotate if the bobbin winder spindle is pushed to the right in the "bobbin winding" position. In this position, the machine is set to wind the bobbin and will not sew; the hand wheel and internal mechanisms are disengaged. To resume sewing and allow the bobbin housing to rotate, push the bobbin winder spindle to the left (sewing position).

To adjust the stitch pattern on the Singer 3116 Simple sewing machine, use the pattern selector dial. For a straight stitch, select the " | " pattern and adjust the stitch length using the stitch length dial. For a zigzag stitch, select the " } " pattern and adjust the stitch length according to the fabric. To choose other patterns, turn the pattern selector dial to the desired stitch and adjust the stitch length as needed.

The needle may not be moving up or down on the Singer 3116 Simple sewing machine due to one or more of the following reasons:
1. The needle is damaged – insert a new needle. 2. The needle is not correctly inserted – insert it with the flat side toward the back. 3. The machine may be jammed – remove the upper thread and bobbin case, turn the handwheel back and forth by hand, and remove the thread. 4. Lint or oil buildup on the hook or needle bar – clean the hook and feed dog as described. 5. The machine may require lubrication – lubricate as described.
Check these possible causes and fix them accordingly.

The Singer 3116 Simple sewing machine may be sewing in reverse continually because the reverse sewing lever is stuck or engaged. To fix this, check if the reverse lever is pressed down or jammed. If necessary, gently release it and ensure it moves freely. If the issue persists, the internal mechanism controlling the reverse function may need cleaning or repair.
Page 51
All overedge stitches are suitable for sewing and overcasting edges and visible seams in one operation. When overcasting, the needle should just go over the edge of the fabric.
Page 57
If the stitches on the left side of the buttonhole are too close together, turn the dial to the left (+). * Turning dial to the left opens left side. If the stitches on the left side of the buttonhole are too open, turn the dial to the right ( ).

Set machine as illustrated on left. Set the stitch length dial to "1" - "1.5". This function is used to secure the tops of kick pleats, as well as pocket openings. First use a straight stitch across the top of the pocket or pleat. This seam should be approximately 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch long.
