Chapter 5:
There are many ways to create PDFs, aside from creating them from within Adobe Creative Suite
4 components, as described in the "Common Resources" chapter of this guide. For example,
when Adobe Acrobat is installed on a Windows system, Microsoft Office applications such as
Word and PowerPoint® use the PDFMaker macro to generate PDFs; while these are fully compliant
Adobe PDF files, they may not be print-ready. You may receive PDFs generated from non-Adobe
programs that use Distiller as a PDF creator, and also from applications that use non-Adobe
libraries or utilities to create PDFs. It may be difficult to determine the origin of PDFs submitted
by customers, because Acrobat 9 Pro can combine existing PDF files into a PDF package (a single
container for multiple individual PDF documents) or into single files with multiple pages.
In an ideal world, your customers carefully follow your specifications for PDF creation, and
provide a perfect PDF for print. However, this is frequently not the case, and you must trouble-
shoot—and repair—customer files to ensure successful imaging and printing.
The edits you can perform on a PDF are limited, but you may be surprised at what you can repair.
The best solution is to fix the problem in the originating application and generate a new PDF; but
you may not have that option. For example, an ad submitted by a customer may have been cre-
ated by another designer, who inherited the file from another supplier, and so on. The combina-
tion of communication issues and looming deadlines means that you have to perform the repair
in Acrobat, with no access to the original files. Thus, it's important to know what you can—and
cannot—fix, and to be aware of the repercussions of some edits.

Changes, Enhancements, and New Features in Acrobat 9 Pro

Acrobat 9 Pro builds on previous versions by substantially enhancing the capabilities of the
Output Preview and Preflight functions, revamping the Document Compare feature, increasing
performance, and more. Other new and enhanced features include:
• Faster launches: Acrobat 9 Pro usually launches in less than three seconds.
• Intelligent Overprint Preview, triggered when a file with overprinting elements
is opened. Preferences allow you to control additional conditions for displaying
overprint.
• The new Object Inspector displays dimensions, resolution, color space, font informa-
tion, and more when clicking on individual objects or stacks of objects.
• The ability to make minor text edits more easily, especially across line endings.
• The option to permanently remap colors with Convert Colors.
• A revamped Document Compare function, with detailed views of the differences
between two files. Quickly detect differences between two versions of a document,
including PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, CAD, and even scanned
documents. View thumbnails indicating all changes on every page. Select the types
of changes you want to display or ignore, including text formatting, images, line
weights, and backgrounds.
• PDF Portfolios, which can contain files of any format, including PDFs.
• Embed content created in Adobe Flash: Enrich your PDF documents with embedded
video, audio, and widgets created in Adobe Flash software that are natively viewable
with Adobe Acrobat® 9 and Adobe Reader® 9 software. Combine the security and
convenience of portable Adobe PDF files with the rich appeal of high-impact media.
• Enhancements to Preflight and Fixup capabilities, with a streamlined interface.
• The ability to import one PDF into another as a separate layer.
• New Fixups that can permanently crop a PDF.
• PDFMaker has been discontinued on the Macintosh platform; Macintosh users can
still use the Adobe PDF printer to create PDFs from Microsoft Office applications.
