If your Vivitar 285HV has not been used for nearly a year and the green ready light does not come on, try the following steps:
1. Use Rechargeable Batteries – Insert fully charged rechargeable Ni-MH batteries or fresh alkaline batteries. 2. Leave It On – Turn on the flash and leave it on for 1–2 hours to allow the capacitor to "repair" itself. 3. Charge and Fire – Set the flash to full power and let it charge for 30 minutes to an hour. Then, press the open flash button to fire it. 4. Repeat the Process – Recharge the flash and fire it again every 30 minutes, repeating this process 5–10 times. 5. Check Output – Use a flash metering light meter or take bracketed exposures with color transparency film to verify if the flash output is correct. 6. Regular Use – Once restored, use the flash every week or two to keep it functioning properly.
If the flash still does not charge fully after these steps, the main capacitor may need replacement.
