Displaying and adding file and image information

About file information

File information—also called metadata—is important in all types of publishing. For example, Photoshop supports
the information standard developed by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) and the International Press
Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to identify transmitted text and images. This standard includes entries for
descriptions, keywords, categories, credits, and origins.
You can find file information in these sources:
Adobe Bridge
Displays metadata and keywords for a selected file.
Displays camera data (EXIF), file properties, description and keywords, edit history, and
File Info dialog box
copyright and authorship information that has been added to the file. You can also add or modify keywords, a
description, and copyright information. You can open the File Info dialog box either in Bridge or in Photoshop.
Displays information, such as such as the current magnification and file size of the active image, and brief
Status bar
instructions for using the active tool.
Info palette
The Info palette displays information about the color values beneath the pointer and, depending on the
tool in use, other useful measurements. In Photoshop, the Info palette also displays a hint for using a selected tool,
document status information, and can display 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit values.
In addition, Photoshop automatically scans opened images for Digimarc watermarks. If a watermark is detected, a
product copyright symbol appears in the image window's title bar along with the information in the Copyright
Status, Copyright Notice, and Owner URL sections of the File Info dialog box.
In Windows and Mac OS, you can add file information to files saved in Photoshop, Large Document Format (PSB),
TIFF, JPEG, EPS, and PDF formats. In Mac OS, you can also add file information to files in other Photoshop
supported formats except GIF. The information you add is embedded in the file using XMP (Extensible Metadata
Platform). XMP provides Adobe applications and workflow partners with a common XML framework that
standardizes the creation, processing, and interchange of document metadata across publishing workflows. When
you save files from Photoshop that contain keywords, those keywords are not displayed in Adobe Acrobat's
Document Properties dialog box when the file is opened in Acrobat.
Note: It's possible to add metadata in ImageReady using the options in the Optimize palette.
