ITI Fast Charger
Safety fi rst
Hazards may arise if nickel-cadmium
rechargeable batteries are improperly
used. The ITI Fast Charger has been

ITI Fast Charger
designed to only recharge ITI sensors with
blue labels. These are powered by sealed
nickel-cadmium battery cells. You must
take special precautions while charging
nickel-cadmium batteries. In order to
avoid hazards while using the ITI Fast
Charging procedure
1)
Observe the following precautions:
- If the sensor has reached a
temperature below +10°C (50°F) it
must be heated in room temperature
for at least 30 minutes before
recharging is started. If the battery
temperature is below 15°C, the
battery charger will not fast charge.
- Do not charge if the ambient
temperature is lower than +15°C
(59°F) or higher than +45°C (113°F).
- Clean the sensor's charging lugs and
the charger clamp surfaces regularly.
- Connect the charger clamps directly
to the charging lugs. Do not use
ropes, shackles, carbine hooks etc, as
these may cause severe corrotion.
2)
Check that the sensor to be charged
has a blue label with the text Fast
charging.
3)
Check that the mains supply voltage
corresponds with the charger's input
voltage (230 or 115 Vac).
4)
Apply AC power to the charger.
5)
Connect the charger clamps to the
sensor's charger lugs. The sensor lugs
are marked with + (plus) and - (minus).
Connect the red clamp to plus and the
black clamp to minus.
Lamp indicator
The charger has a status lamp used to
indicate the current charging status.
Not lit: No charging takes place.
Red: Fast charging in progress.
Green: Maintenance charging only.

these instructions. Charging will then be
performed in a safe and reliable manner.
To ensure safe and correct charging of
the ITI sensors, the ambient temperature
must be within the specified limits. In
low temmperatures, hydrogen gas may be
generated inside the sealed battery cell, and
this will increase the pressure. Increasing

Warnings
DO NOT connect the fast charger to
ITI sensors with red label.
DO NOT start charging if ambient
temperature is lower than +15°C (59°F)
or higher then +45°C (113°F).
DO NOT use the ITI Fast Charger
to charge any other equipment than
Simrad's blue labeled ITI sensors.
Potential hazards may occur.
DO NOT charge more than one sensor
at a time with the same charger. No
parallel connections are allowed.
DO NOT charge the ITI sensors
with any other charger than those
delivered by Simrad. Danger may occur
if the charging current is too high or
otherwise out of control.
DO NOT store the sensor with flat
batteries. Recharge the batteries at least
once every two months, whether they
are used or not.
full capacity in three hours, and then
automatically switch to maintenance
charging. To fully charge the battery, the
sensor must be maintenance charged for
additional three hours.
If the battery temperature is below 15°C,
the charger will not fast charge. To fully
charge a sensor battery using maintenance
charging only, allow 14 to 16 hours.
The charger has a built-in controller to
switch from fast charging to maintenance
charging when the battery voltage reaches
a preset value, or after approximately three
hours controlled by the built-in timer.
The charger may remain connected for an
unlimited time when the lamp is green.
compartment where hydrogen and oxygen
are present may under some conditions
result in an explosion.
Connecting the ITI Fast Charger to any
ITI Fast Charger
ITI Fast Charger to any
other equipment than ITI's blue labeled
sensors must never be done, as the battery
may not be designed for fast charging.
ITI sensors with red labels are not
prepared for fast charging, and must never
be connected to the ITI Fast Charger.
Charger installation
1)
Four holes are provided for mounting
the charger to the bulkhead.
2)
For safety reasons, the charger must be
permanently mounted in an area where
the temperature remains between +15
and +45°C (59 to 113°F).
3)
The charger has built-in short-circuit
protection. This will protect the
electronics from damage if the clamps
are shorted together.
4)
The AC mains supply is 230 or 115
Vac, 50/60 Hz. Power consumption is
20 W.
