To change the battery in a DigiTech DSP-256XL:
1. Open the unit to access the internal battery. 2. The original battery is an Energizer 4.5V #523, which is obsolete. 3. Instead of searching for the original battery, you can replace it with a CR2032 (3V) coin cell using a standard holder. 4. Remove the existing battery holder from the board. 5. Install the new holder for the CR2032 battery. 6. Ensure a low leakage electrolytic capacitor replaces the original leaky tantalum capacitor. 7. Clean any flux residue from the board to prevent excess current leakage. 8. Verify the current draw with a microammeter if possible.
This setup provides enough voltage to retain memory when the unit is off.
