    NODIZ Gen2 NTRODUCTION The NODIZ Pro™ is a state of the art microprocessor controlled digital stand-alone, fully mappable ignition controller for four, six or eight cylinder spark ignition engines. It can be used either to replace older distributor based ignition systems for more modern coil packs, or even to allow the running of carburettors on more modern engines which do not feature a distributor drive.

It must be said first and foremost that tuning an engine can be an exciting experience, as well as a risky one. If you really don't know what you’re doing, or even where to start, read all the manuals until you do, and if you’re still lost - seek professional advice from one of our world-wide installation agents.

    NODIZ Gen2 NODIZ P ™ U OUNTING OF THE The NODIZ Pro™ unit is supplied in a sealed aluminium case, however, it is best practice to mount the unit away from areas where it could become wet or overheated, as this will ensure longevity. Most users generally mount the unit using sticky back Velcro pads to allow for easy removal (an added immobilisation feature when leaving the car unattended at shows/track events), though a hard mounting bracketing kit can be supplied if required.

    NODIZ Gen2 & S RIGGER HEEL ENSOR NSTALLATION 4.1 OEM T RIGGER HEELS If you already have a stock crank sensor/trigger wheel on your engine it needs to be either a 36-1 (35 teeth and one gap) in the case of Fords, or 60-2 (58 teeth then a large double gap) in the case of other makes. Note in the case of many Ford engines, this is cast onto the back of the flywheel, and on many Vauxhalls it is an internal trigger ring on the crankshaft.

    NODIZ Gen2 4.3 C RANK ENSOR ITMENT The sensor should be fitted ideally such that the missing tooth is over the sensor when the engine is at 90* BTDC when using a 36-1 wheel. OEM sensor installations on Ford engines are usually at this angle, and on other makes that use a 60-2 trigger, the sensor is usually fitted at 112* BTDC.

    NODIZ Gen2 NSTALLATION The coil pack should be a “passive” type, that means it doesn't house an ignitor unit inside. The Ford Focus type coils (LEFT) and basic Vauxhall/Bosch types (RIGHT) work best. The Plug-n-Play loom options for the NODIZ that come complete with loom can either have a 3-pin “Ford” oval style connector, or “Vauxhall”...

    NODIZ Gen2 6.2 M ONNECTIONS The NODIZ Pro™ features an automotive standard connector for various connections to be made to the engine and other systems. The main connector is a 20-way WHITE MOLEX style plug (Part# 39-01-2205). The pins are MOLEX part number: 39-00-0077.

    NODIZ Gen2 6.3 B ASIC IRING IAGRAM The following diagram illustrates the most simple of NODIZ Pro™ installations. In this mode, there is no load compensation, so the unit works in a 2D fashion, using engine speed alone (much like a distributor) to map the advance curve.

    NODIZ Gen2 6.4 C RANKSHAFT OSITION ENSOR There are two types of crank sensor commonly available, Variable Reluctance (VR) or Hall/Opto type. Most (but not all) VR sensors have only two connections, whereas most Hall type have three connections (note some Bosch type VR sensors also have 3 connections, with the 3rd pin being a “shield”...

    NODIZ Gen2 6.5 I GNITION ACKS 6.5.1 W IRING OF ACKS The Ford Zetec coil pack needs to receive an ignition switched 12V feed to its centre pin. This should usually be fused at around 7-10A. The outer two pins are the triggering pins that run to the NODIZ Blue & Green Coil wires. The trigger pin drives the two ignition output posts (at the same time, as it is a wasted spark setup) that are in-line with it.

    NODIZ Gen2 6.5.2 W /VW/B IRING OF AUXHALL OSCH ACKS Bosch/Vauxhall coil packs usually feature a 4-pin mini-timer type connection. The plug also has the pins numbered, which is useful: (Note our pre-made Vauxhall/VW harnesses supplied by us already have these connections in place.) 1 - COIL A (Green) 2 - COIL B (Blue)

Rover V8s running DIS packs already use this method of two coil packs.

    NODIZ Gen2 6.6 W (TPS 3D MODE - OPTIONAL) IRING OF THE HROTTLE OSITION ENSOR The throttle position sensor (TPS) is used to tell the NODIZ Pro™ the current throttle position. It should be of a three wire variety (as in most OEM cases and also if supplied by us.) First, we must determine what the connections are on your TPS.

It effectively allows you to ‘hold’ the engines RPM lower (similar to a hard cut) on pressing a button, which in most cases, would be a clutch switch. This in effect ensures perfect launching RPM, or you can employ ‘no-lift-shifting’...

    NODIZ Gen2 6.7.4 E 3BAR MAP S XTERNAL ENSOR UPPORT The NODIZ Pro™ also allows the use of any 5v MAP Sensor. Default settings have been set for you if you use a Magneti Marelli type 3-BAR Map Sensor. (Part # Magneti 215810001101 & APS 05 01). If you are using a different sensor then an accurate MAP reading will not be given, however, if you are willing to overlook this and use a 0-255 scale to represent maximum vacuum to maximum pressure, then indeed, any sensor can be used.

    NODIZ Gen2 TART ETUP The NODIZ will arrive preset for a Ford 36-1 trigger wheel with an offset of 90* BTDC (as per factory on Zetec/ST170s) - if you’re installing onto a Ford Zetec/Duratec/CVH using the factory crank sensor then this means it is entirely plug and play, and you can continue onto the next section.

    NODIZ Gen2 7.2 S ETTING FFSET NGLE The NODIZ Pro™ enables you to accurately set the 0* point by offering a mode called fixed firing. In this mode, the system will always fire its ignition coil on channel A at what it believes to be 0*, or TDC. Use this mode to check the position of Crank Sensor, trigger disc missing tooth angle, and correct coil wiring.

    NODIZ Gen2 7.3 C ALIBRATING THE HROTTLE ENSOR The NODIZ Pro™ offers the optional ability to use a Throttle Position Sensor, or TPS, as a means of determining load. This is more common for use on Individual Throttle Body/Twin Carbs or Motorbike Carbs fuelled engines, as reading a MAP sensor value from these types of engines requires extra piping and take-offs needing to be fitted.

    NODIZ Gen2 NITIAL The NODIZ arrives pre-mapped in most cases, and will always be safe enough for idle/engine warm-up testing. First, follow the section 7.1 to set your trigger if you have something that is not running a Ford type 36-1 wheel, and after that is done, refer to section 7.2 to set the offset (though if you have a Zetec/Duratec/ST170 then there is no need to do so as it is preset to 90* for you.) The factory supplied harnesses feature a female 9-way D-type serial cable connection, which can be linked to your PC with either a straight through serial extension cable (if you have a serial port on your laptop), or you can use one of our FTDI serial->USB adapters to make a USB connection.

    NODIZ Gen2 12 NODIZ P ITTINGS VAUXHALL ENGINES || C20XE/ECOTEC/18XE (VR SENSOR) VR CRANK SENSOR The Vauxhall engines have two types of crank sensors available (HALL or VR), ensure you use the VR (later) type (part number FEB27177 ) as both will fit and read the Vauxhall flywheel. You can check you have a VR type by connecting a multimeter set to AC VOLTS to pins 1 and 2 of the crank sensor plug on the engine.

    NODIZ Gen2 13 T ROUBLESHOOTING NGINE OESN RED LED D IGHT . This is the simplest indication of basic power supply. The light should remain lit whilst cranking and running. 1. Check power (minimum of 9 Volts) and ground connections to the NODIZ Pro unit. 2.
  • Page 42 NODIZ Gen2 LED F REEN LASHES RANKING This is indicative of a poor 12 volt power or ground supply. Check and correct these where possible. Note older cars such as Mk1 Escorts drive the coil with 6v - so if you are using the original power supply wiring on the car, try going direct to the battery (via a 5A fuse) for test purposes.
