Precautions
- When not in use, unplug the AC adaptor from the electrical outlet.
- Do not leave the system or any of its parts in direct sunlight, in damp areas or near a heater.
- Use the Mega Drive AC adaptor only. Using a different AC adaptor will damage your system.
- Do not disassemble the Console or any of its parts.

Connections to TV/Monitor and Antenna
(Except French Model)
If a single-plug antenna cable is plugged into your TV (or you have cable TV), use the RF Switch Box.

- Unplug the Antenna Cable from the TV, and plug it into the RF Switch Box.
- Now, plug the Switch Box Antenna Cable into the TV.
- Plug the Switch Box RF Cable into the RF Jack on the back of the Mega Drive Console.
- Finally, set the RF Switch to "RF" position.
TV with connected video cassette recorder
(Except French Model)
If a video cassette recorder is already connected between the antenna and the television's terminal, use the RF Switch Box.

- Disconnect the video cassette recorder cable from the television's terminal. Then, plug this same cable into the RF Switch Box.
- Now, plug the Switch Box Antenna Cable into the TV.
- Plug the Switch Box RF Cable into the RF Jack on the back of the Mega Drive Console.
- Finally, set the RF Switch to "RF" position.
(Not available in France)
If your TV has video and audio input jacks (often found in the back of recent-model TV's), you can use the optional Sega Audio/Video cable for improved graphics and sound. No other connectors are necessary.

- Insert the single-plug end of the Audio/Video Cable into the Video Jack on the Mega Drive Console.
- Insert the yellow plug on the Audio/ Video Cable into the TV's video input. Insert the white plug into the TV's audio input.

- Plug the Peritel Cable into the Video Jack on the back of the Console.
- Connect the Peritel Cable directly to your TV.
Powering Up the System

- Connect the AC Adaptor Plug to the Adaptor Jack on the back of the Mega
Drive Console. - Plug the AC Adaptor into an electrical outlet.
TV Channel Setting
(Except French Model)

(For New Zealand)
- Set the Channel Switch on the back of the Console to CH 2.
- Set your TV to Chamnel 2.
- If channel 2 is used for broadcasting, set your TV to channel 3. Then, be sure to switch the Channel Switch on the Console to CH 3.
- If your TV has an automatic fine tuning control (AFC), turn it off and manually adjust the picture. However, if you have a color TV that turns black and white when the AFC is turned off, leave the AFC on.
(Other Countries)
- Set your TV to Channel 36.
- If your TV has an automatic fine tuning control (AFC), turn it off and manually adjust the picture. However, if you have a color TV that turns black and white when the AFC is turned off, leave the AFC on.
Operating the System

- Plug your Mega Drive Control Pad into Control Port 1 on the Console. For two players, plug a second Mega Drive Control Pad (sold separately) into Control Port 2.
- Turn the power off. Be sure the power light is not on.
- When you are using a Cartridge, insert it, label facing forward, into the cartridge slot. Press it fully into the slot.
- Turn the power on. The power light should come on.
- If all connections have been properly made, the Sega logo will appear, followed by the title screen and, in some cases, a demonstration of the game.
- During play, to reset the game to the beginning, press the Reset Button on the Console. The title screen will then appear.
Stereo Sound
The Mega Drive System features stereo sound for extra excitement.
Just plug standard stereo headphones, such as the ones that come with a portable cassette player, into the Mega Drive headphone jack to enjoy thrilling stereo game sound effects and music.
- Adjust the headphone volume to a comfortable level.
- Turn the TV volume down all the way when enjoying stereo sound.
- Use only stereo headphones with the Mega Drive System. Attempting to use an earphone (monaural) or similar device might damage it.
- When using the Sega Audio/ Video cable, the sound from your TV will be monaural.
- To hook the Mega Drive System up to your stereo system, insert a mini "Y" Adaptor* into the Mega Drive headphone jack. Insert left and right inputs into appropriate input jacks on your stereo receiver. Always have the volume control turned all the way down when you first turn on the Mega Drive System.

Troubleshooting Chart
Problem | Before requesting repair, check the following items: |
No picture on screen | - Is the Console turned on?
- Is the AC adaptor properly plugged in?
- Is the TV turned on?
- Is there power to the wall socket?
- Is the Cartridge properly inserted?
- Does the channel switch on the back of the Console agree with the TV channel being used? (New Zealand model)
- Review the connections between the Console and Peritel terminals. (French model)
- Have you confused the RF Jack with the Video or Power-in Adaptor Jacks? (Except French model)
- Review the connections between the antenna cable, Console and TV terminals. (Except French model)
- Is the RF switch set to "RF"? (Except French model)

Screen flickers or no color | - Are the antenna cables properly connected? (Except French model)
- Is the TV channel fine tune adjustment properly set? (Except French model)
- Are the TV color controls properly set?
- Is the Cartridge properly inserted?

No game sound | - Is the TV volume too low or off?
- Have the connection cables come loose or become disconnected?
|
Picture on TV screen is not steady | - Adjust the vertical and horizontal hold controls on your TV.
|
Fringes appear on TV during a game | - Adjust the manual fine tuning controls on the TV.
|
Fringes appear on TV during a broadcast | - Is the antenna cable properly connected?
- Make sure that you have turned off the power on the Console.
- Is the RF switch set to "ANT"? (Except French model)
- Is the Peritel Cable still connected? (French model)

No power light | - Is there power to the wall socket?
- Is the AC adaptor properly plugged in?

For owners of projection televisions. Still pictures or images may cause permanent picture tube damage or mark phosphor of the CRT. Avoid repeated or extended use of video games on large screen projection televisions.
